I'd only be in it for the money.

But practise Orwellian DoubleThink cash-wise.

And be a bit depressed about stuff too...a tad troubled if you like.

Then just as I was fucking laughing my arse off and piling into a supermodel i'd

- knowing my luck - get shot.

Or shoot myself.

Whatevs.

Do you think every artist is only in it for the money?

That would almost make me give up any sense of hope for anything

I'm amused by the idea that the magic of Glastonbury somehow dragged the Stones away from the corporate machine and reconnected them with their simpler values of yore.

It's almost as if they didn't do two massive, mega-money gigs the following fortnight to make up for the lost money.

I don't have much of an opinion on this but the bolded bit is you ruining your own point isn't it? If you think they lost money doing Glasto, then surely they'd have done something else instead if that was all they cared about?

'a lot of interest in signing them'? From who?? Glasto is the only other festival that could possibly have wanted to book them, and there's obviously no contest with the fee there, so what was the competition? Their own shows? Fair play to them if they're using supply and demand that is entirely of their own control to dictate terms to Giddings, fuck me.

British summer time? Does the hard rock calling brand still exist? Not technically festivals according to us but they brand themselves as such and are likely to have wanted them?

Performers can be pleased to be performing but still want as much money as possible from their time can't they?

Well exactly, false binary isn't it? I absolutely fucking love my job but still want as much money as I can get for doing it.

Yeah, bad phrasing. They've obviously did BST because it big, easy money and made up for the fact Glasto doesn't pay quite as much as elsewhere (say, IOW...) is what I was getting at.

The point is, to say The Stones (of all bands) weren't/aren't in it for the money is pretty silly.

They were going to do Hyde Park anyway. They didn't do it to make up for what they didn't get at Glastonbury.

That's covered by the first part of the sentence :P

And I'm sure someone, somewhere on their PR/booking/whatever team had Glasto and it's smaller-than-normal fee's in the back of their mind when those dates were booked, even if they weren't signed up to do it yet.

But they wern't not going to do a couple of big London gigs on their European tour was they? Its not like the BST organisers would have told them to fuck off if they didn't do Glastonbury.

So they clearly wanted to do Glastonbury for one reason or another than just the money, be that credbility/just to say they done it/artistic or charitable reasons.

No but it made them park the cash for 1 gig and really put in a top performance. Most people were expecting a total poop show.

They knew it was a career highlight and very important. Mick is shrewd enough to know that. The Factory Girl/Glastonbury Girl, Micks "thanks for finally asking us" gag, his big smile at Lisa Fischer during Gimme Shelter, Keith blessing himself and touching the stage at the end, all of Sympathy for the Devil, Jagger subsequently hinting that its one of the best gig they've ever done etc.

Glorioius moments.

Actually got goosebumps reading this. What a gig.

I too thought it was an absolutely brilliant gig, well worth all the waiting from Costello onwards (although I wanted to do that anyway, such a great line-up beforehand too) and the crowd being a bit squished.

Such a shame that the TV coverage doesn't capture it at all, but meh, who cares!

Incredible looking back on the Stones set - just seeing Satisfaction again brought back goosebumps. Just contrast that with the Stones IoW performance and it leaves me in no doubt that Fleetwood Mac made the wrong choice in every way. Such a shame. Hopefully next year but it does all seem to leave a bit of a sour taste if the rumours were true that they had agreed to play this year before they had to pull out ...

Dear Lord, what a loaf of waffle. If you enjoyed it then fine, but all of that is complete speculation. You've fallen for that hook, line and sinker.
