From The Rolling Stones website

"It's our 50th anniversary year and we have some big news coming soon!"

So that's pretty much confirmation that they've agreed they're going to tour.

They wont be unfortunately.

It will be bad news for T day unfortunately.

I reckon we could be fine.

They'll probably announce that they're going to tour, giving the time frame for the tour in some manner, and perhaps the countries they'll visit. But i reckon they'll do that as its own announcement, with the actual dates for the tour coming along later.

From what i understand, the stones have a different way of putting together their tours than other bands, so it's quite possible that the day-by-day dates and exact locations being given is a fair way off yet.

Hope you're right. Or maybe they'll just announce the first dates? Which I presume will be the US dates?

yep, that sort of thing might happen too. Just because something might get announced it might not reveal anything for Glasto or not.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works out that way. :)

It'll only happen if they actually personally care about playing Glasto, want to play Glasto. Because I can't see them taking the lower money that Glasto pays without them caring.

And being the stones there's a good chance that they don't care. It's not like they've needed it up to now.

They don't need to worry about selling records, they make their money from touring.

I'm 50/50 about if they really will do it. Famously, Jagger likes a pound note, but I've got a feeling they might actually do this. 10 years ago, not a chance, but next year maybe, just maybe...

They could always do a Springsteen and wrtie a personal note to them.

I'm not sure they need to do that. I believe that there's already a very good communication route between the Eavii and the stones (tho I could be wrong).

I can see them doing it for the same reasons U2 did: exposure and a chance to sell their records to a younger fanbase.

There's certainly good commercial reasons why they should do it, but they might prefer the jam today of a big upfront fee from elsewhere, or management who might not benefit from back-catalogue sales might encourage other choices than Glasto.

Or they might simply think "we've got to here without needing to do shows on the cheap, so why should we start now?"

There's all sorts of things which might get in the way of the reasons you suggest. Remember, this is the band who knocked back the Olympics! Why shouldn't they feel similarly not-bothered with Glasto?

True. These are long standing reasons though, just surprised Glastonbury still keeps trying!

I'm not so sure that Glastonbury has been trying, until more recently (the last 5-ish years or so, since they did IoW).

The impression i got for the Olympics was more they felt under-rehearsed and hadn't played for a long time.

it could be that - but it still shows that the chance of massive exposure won't have them doing something if they're not bothered about doing it. Cos after all, they could have got together and do the necessary rehearsal if they wanted to. They didn't want to.

Finding it very difficult to get excited by the Stones. Struggling to find anyone who has much positive to say about their shows over the last few years. Seems to definitely be the case of "had it, lost it .... and then its gone forever". Just have my suspicions that a glasto headline set would be a hugely over-hyped and disappointing affair. I'm happy to admit that I missed my chance to see the Stones because of my age and should just accept it

Saying that, I'd almost definitely go and see them, and would then probably hate myself for it.

I think Oasis are miles away from doing it (they hate each other, Frank Sidebottom-sorry, Liam hates Glastonbury, they might have burned their bridges by turning down 2009) though I'd say the Roses are nailed on. If it is them two I really hope it doesn't get announced before ticket day as otherwise the crowd will be c**ntsoup

I'd go and see them but I have the same thinking, I'd be expecting it to be crap. I did the same thing with U2-"I'll go for the spectacle but I'm not really optimistic" and my instincts were correct. That said, I'd wanted to see Stevie Wonder for years and was nervous before that set and he was brilliant. Looking at Youtube clips of the 'Stones last tour doesn't inspire either

In all honesty I cannot see the Rolling Stones putting on THAT good a show, I can't see the Stone Roses doing it either.

The best headliners in previous years have been reaching their peak: Pulp '95, Radiohead '97 etc. I think if Arcade Fire, Stone Roses & Rolling Stones headlined then AF would put on the best show.
