New format for buying tickets

As someone who remembers the days of Aloud.com and the nightmare of 2004, sitting and watching a bar fail to load does seem more sensible than the stress of constantly refreshing.

 

If the payment page takes people’s details and goes through first time, that’s all the better. I’ll be trying on Sunday but I think I’ve had my ticket-buying luck this year with a smoother than most Oasis purchase!

I think the worst thing about the new system is, now I have my ticket I have to be genuinely sympathetic to those of you who don't get tickets whereas previously I would just assume you didn't f5 enough.

It'll be a mix. Definitely scammers in there, but given the way the new system works - it does make it a hell of a lot easier for the "pay me for this service" types to insert themselves as well, and if they're taking in thousands for "guaranteed deposits" then they only need to spend a percentage of that to put themselves in a position to be near enough certain of delivering and build a reputation so even more people go with them next time.

 

Here's the thing. I've got the knowledge and the access to resources that I can "play the game" enough to ensure my own success (done) and bring a fair few people with me (pending) without spending any extra money. But ultimately the game has changed massively in favour of the tout-types. And tbh with that in mind I'm not even sure I'll want to play the game past the next festival.

it’s making me feel ill knowing this exists, but I don’t have the access to it. But I do think it will change the feel of the festival after this if it becomes a popular route in. I just hope I get there one more time before things change too much for me…

If you read my post history, I am very familiar with the groups and individuals that offer these services and whilst there will be scammers, these are typically pretty easy to identify vs those that genuinely offer these services, which are not a scam as they will get you a ticket, just with a large finders fee on top. I'm not paying up myself, nor am I answering any pm's (I've had a lot) asking me to point them in the direction of such services as to be totally honest, I don't think its worth it and is wholly unfair on the rest who can't afford to pay an extra £150-250 per ticket.

I've never seen resale groups acting with such confidence they can secure tickets and I alluded to this weeks ago. It's never been easier or cheaper to secure a general sale Glasto ticket providing you're sensible and can do your research effectively. I reckon the knock on effect will change the audience/atmosphere of the festival, but I feel it's been going that way for a few years anyway

The only way they can give any guarantee is if they are in the booking page and even then it is not a guarantee of anything so hopefully nobody will trust total strangers with they cash/bank details/card details - else tnhey get what they deserve.

I can guarantee you they aren't scammers, at least not in the sense of them taking your money and giving you nothing. Glastonbury ticket revenue is a drop in the ocean for them and anyone that has managed to get themselves a reputation that allows them to be a "supplier" for such events isn't about to risk their reputation / income stream for the sake of bumping someone off to the tune of a few hundred quid. When that has happened previously and someone has done a runner with a customers money etc, they were usually reimbursed by other members of the group to ensure the reputation of the group wasn't damaged and that future customers could buy with confidence.

 

I know you don't want to believe this activity exists, but it really does (Seems Incident can testify to the same as me) and pretending it doesn't only allows Glastonbury to do the same.

That was an all dayer yeah, remember it well.

 

Although funnily enough, I remember when the resale happened (in whatever form that was in 2004) so I texted a mate telling him and he replied "Great Ill nab one when I get home" and an hour or so later he logged on and got one.

Fair enough, apologies for lumping you in with the wrongens there! As my post history attests to, I used to do similar activity when unemployed during covid and still know people that participate in such "arbritrage" as they like to call it. Certainly a market for it sadly!

At least with the old system there was the anticipation of every refresh having the chance of the screen changing and the ticket page pop up. As people have said when the bars are nowhere near the end you know you have no chance

As someone who tried solo/with my partner for years without being successful and without knowing there was a whole community that gamed the system and regularly secured tickets over over other unknowing but willing punters.....yes it is absolutely a much fairer system now.

Yep - I was on dial up on a laptop and on the phone- spent all night trying to get through - first time ever I didn’t  get tickets. Nightmare. Managed to get tickets again every year after that until 2023 and this year. ( ended up volunteering this year. Not hopeful for Sunday with this new system but will hopefully get Oxfam place again. Last night’s queue was very underwhelming- at least I managed to get dinner in oven whilst waiting!

You still have to be organised enough to be in the queue before 9am on ticket day and stay online the whole time. It rewards interested parties more than disinterested parties. If it was a proper ballot so many people would enter for the hell of it, who otherwise wouldn't bother actually trying for tickets on ticket day.

There were 3 or 4 of us in the office trying that year - sale started early evening, we called it quits around 1am. I got home, slept for about 4 hours and then went straight back into the office at 6 to try again. 

Within the hour I think I had tickets - through the international call line loophole that year - thanks to this message board as usual 👏

That's how I got Oasis tickets in 1996 for Knebworth, international number for Manchester Arena (Nynex it was called at that time)

You could only buy 2 tickets at a time. I was on a PC and my flatmate was on a laptop in our scummy flat. I got lucky around midnight for me and a friend then stayed on until about 3 trying for my flatmate and his Mrs before I went to bed.

 

He gave up a couple of hours later but his girlfriend got up and bagged their 2 within minutes.

I have vague memories of how we got tickets in 2004 but I know it was odd.  
From America, I think i must have been trying and it kept crashing?  All i know is that I left the sale thinking that i did not get tickets.  I also did not get a confirmation email.  When my credit card bill came, a month later, the charge was there.  And I remember calling somewhere in the UK to try and have them confirm that I did indeed have tickets, and they said that I did.  Total shock on my end. 

Back then, international tickets had to be picked up from an office in Castle Cary.  I had never even been to the UK before.  I just bought a train ticket to Castle Cary and hoped for the best.  I got there, and sure enough there was a ticket waiting for me.  But then I hadnt thought about how I would get from Castle Cary to the festival site.  So I hitchhiked along with 2 aussies and a lovely man brought us down.  He has driving a bus and it was empty, on his way down to the site already and figured he might as well give us a lift.  Fond memories of 2004

This forum was a good example. A spreadsheet of say 50 groups all trying for eachother that pushed a 'normal' ticket tryer down the pack due to shear volume focusing on specific reg numbers and tech tricks. A lot of the posts I've seen over the past few years always highlighted to me we deserve to go because we want it more and put the ticket day effort in. EVERYONE should have a equal chance to get a ticket not just the gatekeeping select. The festival needs to constantly evolve it's customers to live and develop, so if it's full of first timers then so be it... and I'm speaking as someone who has been 20+ times and failed yesterday.

my prediction is that despite all this talk of a "fairer" system:  The majority of people who always seem to go will still get tickets and most people who never get tickets will still not get tickets.

not 100% but in a similar proportion to what happened each year under the old system.
