Headliners 2023

I kinda agree here. Was saying a month ago that Lizzo would step up given the opportunity and blow everyone away. That would feel a very Glasto thing. Booking who they have doesn’t. Let’s be fair, they have a history of having headliners who are relatively young and on an upward trajectory, so why not again?

I wondered if she was subbing GnR for that reason. They are unpredictable and unreliable. She’s a consummate professional and even if people don’t believe she’s big enough she would absolutely win people over in that field. I remember before her West Holts performance people not being convinced by her and after that she was the highlight for most people in the field.  I think they are going to have to start being brave and put some newer artists that maybe on paper don’t appear to have the numbers because streaming etc has changed music forever and it has made headliners harder to find. Glastonbury could start being an influencer in helping move peoples careers up to that next level. I would like to see them try and do that. In years when they have a big legend like Elton they could afford to take a punt as well.

Good to hear.

There are a huge number of people who could learn from her although it amazes me how many people bring that very tiny incident up and yet people who have had kids take out restraining orders against them people hope are headlining the Other Stage.

I’ve long given up on expecting musicians to be squeaky clean. Mild trespasses I can look past but don’t give wrong’uns like Homme or your man from Kasabian the time of day anymore.

Can I ask why you highlighted one thoughtless tweet she sent about 4 years ago then . It seems that should count as a mild trespass?

Honest answer is it was a first thing on a Saturday morning attempt at humour. I know there were a few tales around these parts in the last couple of years of her behaving in a less than savoury manner. Tales of divaish behaviour and whatnot.

I genuinely don’t care either way, but as you say people have blind spots for the behaviour of acts they like.

Who’s this?

Josh Homme.

Sounded like he and Brody Dalle were going through a messy divorce. QOTSA were meant to be headlining Other last year by all accounts, but the the stories about him, his kids and the divorce broke and they disappeared from the equation.

Slash is still fucking ace! I'm tempted to be there for Slash!

When I saw them a month ago Axl’s voice was significantly better than that. Perhaps he was sick for the gig that video was taken at? Or perhaps his monitor mix went bad?

They can put on a headline worthy show.

Equally there have been people who weren’t considered big enough at the time. Including F&tM. Mumfords, Pulp, the Arctics Monkeys the first time. They have two big names, take a gamble on the third…

Flo and Pulp were last minute bump ups due to injury. Mumfords wasn’t a roaring success, and Arctics were hardly a gamble at that point, they headlined TITP the same year and sold out 2 nights at Lancashire Cricket Club around the same time.

Yeah - until there's petitions in the news and Emily's getting death threats then Ye is the standard bearer.

I had a 6-month-old with a horrible stomach bug at that point. Me and the wife were taking turns each to sleep in his room and on my turn, not really sleeping, I got way too involved (trying to defend GFL) in the Facebook arguments around that, the start of the petition etc. That was a dark time.

Lizzo, Little Simz, Florence & the Machine, Christine & the Queens, Kae Tempest, Wolf Alice. All with current releases. All with a sizeable body of work (i.e. more releases than Mumfords and Eilish) I think all touring right now. And all able to bring a little less cock rock than the current rumours. Certainly less cock.

The only acts there who could even vaguely headline are the one who’s already done it and maybe at a push Lizzo. The others are absolutely nowhere near.

It's a personal pet peeve of mine. I hate all this ageist terms and use of arbitrary groupings of people born between random sets of years (like millennials and generation x) that are thrown around these days all they do is pit normal people against each other and distract us from the rich and powerful who are destroying society and the planet.

Every time someone says dad rock it makes Michael Gove a little bit richer and more powerful

I was genuinely excited to watch GnR. I loved Appetite For Destruction for a time in my youth. However, just watched this and holy shit it’s bad!

One of those gigs where it'll sound much better when you're there. And ropey at times on TV.

But hey, at least Duff can play now hes not high all the time. Listen to this for a bass intro.

They used to but Stormzy aside, they very much seem to be going for big established acts now rather than promoting newer acts who maybe haven’t had the chance to headline a major festival here. Most of the first time headliners within the last 10 years or so have already been very established acts (Adele, Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish etc, even Mumfords at the time) and some of the biggest acts in the world. I’d much rather see Lizzo headline but Guns make more sense based on the bookings since 2015 or so.

Well, yeah. Part of the currently very successful formula is they book the biggest headliners they can for the fee they pay. Can hardly blame them, given the current cost of living crisis and the grief they’ve got over the price increases, for not suddenly wanting to tinker with that formula and start turning away stadium sized acts that are willing to do it.

I don’t think her ‘divaish’ behaviour is even in the same league as Elton John. In fact I don’t think she’s even playing the same sport has him. I think she should be given a pass under your mild trespasses rule. None of us is perfect. If everything I did in the last 5 years was public record I am sure people would find some occasions when I have behaved less than perfectly. I am sure the same goes for everyone.

Lizzo is a target for the far right. The fash fucking hate her. Solidarity is absolutely the right move in this case.

Is she the one who had the audacity to play an old flute and they went ballistic over it?

    • Muse will be about but the issue with Muse is that they’ll have the pick of doing IOW, BST, Glasto, R&L or big parks/stadiums.

    • Not sure what this means for 2027 but it looks like Holt Farm's website and email are both now inactive and unavailable.   It'll be a shame if they don't operate for 2027 as it was an excellent alternative to the other off-site offerings.   Fingers crossed they're just enjoying their downtime 🤞
    • Deftones, Blink, Muse?   Deftones as the next bump up makes all the sense, Blink as the "band that has never played before" and round out with Muse as its been a long time since they headlined and they have a new album coming which seems on the heavier side from the singles so far.   I could see Muse do their own tour to be fair, maybe MCR in their place? Could also see Deftones switched out for Slipknot/SOAD depending on who is about.
    • I have no issue with the Primavera crowd in most respects. They’re always friendly, respectful and no hint that there could be trouble at any point.   However…the talking is horrific here. The xx was pretty much ruined for me due to people having conversations with their mates the whole way through. Noticed it from all different nationalities across the weekend…English, Irish, Spanish etc. There seems to be no understanding of the nuances of when it’s okay to talk and when it isn’t. And obviously the sound being quiet at a lot of spots on the main stages exacerbates the issue. That alone has made me reconsider whether I will be coming back, it would probably take a lineup as good as this year (unlikely)
