Not a gig as such but I went to a Doves "In Conversation" at Rough Trade in Liverpool tonight. 

 

It was Jez and Andy with a 6music DJ guiding the conversation, and they were so engaging, interesting and funny. It lasted around an hour 15 mins.

 

The best bit was that they did 4 acoustic tracks, Here it Comes, The Cedar Room, Carousels and a new one. Hearing the two of them singing those with no wall of noise behind them has made me 100% confident for the tour without Jimi, their voices were both incredible. Can't believe they played those old ones like that in front of around 100 people! 

 

Just need to sort out some tickets for Manchester in March now, hugely regretting not getting them when I had presale access!!

Went to Mood Swings at Yes in Manchester last Friday to see The Orchestra (For Now), Cardinals and O.. All 3 were brilliant but The Orchestra (For Now) were pretty special. One of the best live bands I've seen for a while.

Saturday night was Mik Artistik a minute from our house at The Snug. Class as always. My mate was chatting to him afterwards and said it doesn't look likely that they'll be at Glastonbury again this year as it would now cost them too much money to play there.

Very nice Nothing But Thieves show in Stockholm, usual array of top tunes and a new song as well. However, feels like they've been non stop since Covid so could be due a break 🤷🏼‍♂️

First gig of the year for me tonight. Bullet For My Valentine & Trivium at the O2.  I got tickets mainly to see BFMV and they were fantastic but was surprised I also enjoyed Trivium, who I never really listened to before.

I went to an all day thing at Future Yard in Birkenhead yesterday.

 

Part of Independent Venues Week, some great, some not so great. Casino were the stand out, such a great act.

Jacob Alon was amazing in Manchester Tuesday night. 

 

Definitely going to be a big thing if they can keep the songs coming at this quality.

Went to see Pap Roach at Liverpool Arena last night.

 

Not an act I normally bother with but it was a free tickets and what else would you be doing on a Sunday night?

 

Very good at what they do, the sound was excellent, lots of pyro, lively crowd.

Reytons were an absolute riot at Brixton on Friday night. First time Ive seen them outside a festival setting. Good stuff, must've rattled through 18ish songs in no time.

Jazz Sabbath at Liverpool Philharmonic Sound Room last night.

 

The shtick being that they recorded some jazz albums in the late 60s, then the main guy had a heart attack before and they weren't issued. By the time he was well enough to come out of hospital, a bad from Birmingham had nicked the songs, changed the style and released successful albums.

 

I like jazz, I'm no expert, but they sounded great to me, obviously accomplished musicians. For most of the songs, the Sabbath connection isn't obvious until they come round to the riff again.

 

All in all, nice.

Maribou State were a lovely vibe in Manchester tonight. Not sure they would've convinced anyone who was ambivalent, but if you're into them it's a good show. Couple of extended/reworked versions that sit nicely. They need to either swap Midas and Blackoak round though, or speed Blackoak up a touch, for the finish they want. Blackoak is my favourite but Midas was better tonight and there was a hint of anticlimax about the encore.
