Live gigs - Who you've seen were they good, bad etc.

Vampire weekend at Manchester apollo last night great fun crowd in good form .

Great set well over 2 hours .

Slightly strange encore of doing covers that crowd shouted out bit hit and miss .

But the main show was great

Hard-Fi at Leeds University Union last Friday were in very good nick, better than I must say I expected.

 

Paul Heaton on the Saturday at First Direct Arena was reliably excellent, as always, though I do wish that he had taken his short "hits" tour into the bigger venues.

Great! Glad they are still putting on a good show. Seeing them on Weds and really looking forward to it. Will get thinking of a song for the encore then…

Agreed, great set, really enjoyed it - foregoing support to do an extended set ended up working well, thoroughly entertained throughout now they have the discography to back up a longer show.

 

Laughed when someone requested Neutral Milk Hotel and he tried to start remembering how it went, probably about five people in the room (me included!) would have known it enough to sing along.

I know some people who saw Paul Heaton at Bridlington the other day, and they said he was amazing. I love him, got to admit 😁

Fontaines at Leeds Arena last night.

 

The band of the moment it seems, and it was easy to see why. Sound was incredible and the band were so tight. Crowd pretty lively for a Tuesday night too. 

 

As mentioned previously would be no shock to see them headlining in 2027 should they keep riding the wave.

Dead Pony last night in the little room at Leadmill.  Absolutely wild gig with a very enthusiastic crowd, lost a shoe in the mosh pit and got ringing ears despite earplugs (must research better ear protection).

 

Really enjoyed one of their supports - Gallus, would definitely look out for them in the future.

Vampire Weekend sounded incredible tonight at Hammersmith Apollo - new tunes sounding as good as the old ones and LOVED their encore taking random song requests from the crowd. Amazing talent to hit all those tunes without rehearsing (The Kinks, Shania Twain, Michael Jackson, George Harrison….i think they could sing the phone book). Really hoping to see them again on the farm. Fingers crossed. Plenty of material to keep us dancing at the Pyramid.

Having suddenly become free on the Wednesday night at short notice, ended up plumping for the cheaper confines of The Horrors over Sam Fender in Leeds. Something To Remember Me By, genuinely for me, one of the best songs of the post-millennium period.

 

Live show itself a little too hazy, but hey ho, that's part of the appeal. Belgrave Music Hall does sensational pizza.

Just out of Hope of the States at Stereo in Glasgow and it was magnificent. 90 minutes of bangers. The new stuff sounded really good too. Glad to finally tick that one off.

Gallus are a good time, they’re a nice bunch as well. They’ve been doing a lot on the European circuit last two years, wonder if they’ll get a decent sized break soon.

Nitin Sawhney with the Halle Orchestra last night at Bridgewater Hall. Great stuff. 1st part was him playing with his band backed by the string section of the orchestra. He was then interviewed about his heart attack earlier this year before the 2nd part which was a composition he'd done about his heart attack performed by the full orchestra

They bought out the lead singers from the support bands Soapbox & Gallus for a version of Limp Bizkit’s Break Stuff, great fun.

Just got back from seeing Vampire weekend in wolves and I will third and fourth how good they are, blown away..havent been blown away by a gig when not expecting it for a long while

Saw the kooks a couple of years ago and have to say I was massively dissatisfied. I think he thinks he's Alex Turner, mumbling and swaggering. 

 

Top tunes though, just his patter was dreadful.

 

Mel C was like a ball of amphetamine on stage. Can't sing, doesn't hide it, belts out spice Girls stuff. Very entertaining.

Halle Orchestra are superb. Seen them numerous times at Bridgewater Hall over the years.

Idles last night in Manchester was outstanding. 2 hour long set, barely any time to catch breath throughout. Sounding tight/solid. Great atmosphere and I do love the Apollo. Never been to a bad gig there although I've known people to proper slate the venue in the past.

Culture Club's big eighties tour yesterday was fun, but with a pretty major disadvantage. Playing their first two records sequentially, which has the misfortune to mean Do You Really Want to Hurt Me? and Karma Chameleon arrive back-to-back at the end of the first half, which does leave the audience restless for the remaining forty-five minutes or so.

 

Tony Hadley appeared to be in pure lush mode, perched on a crooner's stool with his bourbon, but even with his cravat and copy of the Brexit manifesto in hand, he's got a set of pipes on him - and Spandau Ballet did have some of the best new romantics tunes out there at their peak.

 

Heaven 17 has a surprisingly lush sound compared to the records, probably aided by a pair of soul back-up singers. Gave it some good welly for the half-hour they got early doors.
