That's what May thought when she called that snap election to increase her majority.

Plenty more people were willing to vote for Corbyn the first time than the second, and in the first campaign anti-semitism didn't come up and the IRA stuff was barely touched on.

Brexit mattered a lot. In the aftermath of the vote, the consensus was that brexit was gonna happen so a soft one was more pallatable than a hard one. After a couple of years of undermining the May government with all these legal challenges and all this shite, there was a sense that it had been disastrous upto now and a reversal was possible - so then the policy changed to this, in hindsight shite, second vote idea, working class brexit towns in the north left for get brexit done, liberals left for a hail mary shot at a total reversal with the lib dems. Probably about 50 people who all work in the media left because of antisemitism.

May really did fuck up that campaign, and the labour manifesto was popular and Corbyn was the man for a while, then his popularity started to sink again. Corbyn was actually a good campaigner and seemed to come alive leading up to that election...for the 2019 one he just looked knackered and fed up.

But this I agree with too. He was poor on the campaign, looked tired and the manifesto was a bit garbled, every few days just something that, although good, wasn’t really on people’s mind (most notoriously free broadband).

Something a bit different - thoughts...

There's a lot to unpick here... I don't know which is sadder, UKIPers only fantasy is a dildo, or that Labour's consider Passionate kissing a fantasy.

Lolled at the libs fetishising ethnic minorities and LGBTQ - that doesnt sound very liberal (and also very expected, hypocrits that they are)

I was talking about this with my girlfriend last night - the fact that they see having sex with an ethnic minority as a sexual fantasy is a bit 🤔

I suspect that's more than a bit unfair -

The way that these kinds of surveys are usually carried out isn't to simply ask "What do you fantasise about" and noting down the things that people bring up. There'll have been a list of all those options (and probably a few others that didn't statistically spike) with the simple instruction "tick all of these that apply". Obviously those two approaches would likely yield quite different results.

Considering the way it was likely conducted, the part I'd be concerned about isn't the Lib Dems - I'm far more concerned that the other parties were all low enough that a statistical spike was even possible.

But...that 2017 campaign...if May had won convincingly then we would have had her brexit deal with UK still in the customs union and close to single market making things a lot easier in NI and for some businesses...and we wouldn't have Bojo as PM and Patel in the cabinet.

(maybe).

May didn't need to win it just needed smarter politicians and a smarter public who realised where may failing would lead. I've have hated Labour if they helped vote Mays brexit thru but it would have been the better thing.

There’s a really nice nuanced point about this in David’s book Jews Don’t Count: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0008399476/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_AVQB7MPB8PW1NBS46Y32

He doesn't say Corbyn is overtly “anti-Semitic” but that he has an obvious blind spot when it blurs into “anti-capitalism”...

Worth a read (if you haven’t).

That's a very good observation and why I could never support Corbyn. Right throughout his career, it was clear he would work with almost anybody who supported his primary political goals. In his eyes, capitalism was the great evil and if somebody was helping him defeat it, then he'd never look too closely at their other beliefs or actions.

(And I'll check out the book too, thanks!)

Anyway -

When is the Official eFestivals Party of Great Britain going to field candidates?

And what’s our policies?

Surely need to have something on flags and chairs at pyramid? Imagine the debate at conference on whether or not Foals are big enough to headline - shades of Kinnock in 1985

Haha very true, the lines are already well drawn for the factional infighting. We’re a political party in all but name.

Am I the only person who finds it odd that after the Brexit lies & abuses of power and  the needless covid deaths, our prime minister appears to be in more trouble over who paid for his wallpaper?

I think it’s because the renovation of Downing St can be pinned solely on Johnson whereas Brexit would tarnish the entire Conservative Party which is why the media are more willing to give these stories airtime.

Just finished reading this book. Thought it was really good and articulated a lot of things about this nuanced issue very well.

lindynlies so forgiven you want to go round the loop again with thousands set to vote for the sex pest. And free pass the bigger than brexit lies. To a bigger than brexit disaster flag shaggers everywhere are too busy shagging the flag to go where it matters.

The music was down tempo, bass heavy, kept evolving, just mesmerising. Anyone have any ideas? and/or was there as well?
