Record Store Day 2020

Just wondered if anyone on here will be visiting their local independent record shop this Saturday for RSD 20 (part 1)? If so, how safe do you feel doing so?

I was a bit fearful, as my local is only tiny, but they have assured me it's one in one out and you leave by the back entrance. Still a bit worried about the queue though (normal RSD there's 100+ in the queue).

If you're planning on going, what's on your wish list? Mine includes The Cure, The Kinks, Carter USM, The Pogues, New Order & Durutti Column.

I'm hoping there is enough stock online for me to pick up the Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes - End of Suffering Live to Vinyl.

Few others I have an eye on too.

I can't see me getting to physical store - the nearest one would require me getting into town, parking and getting past the crowds!

I'm hoping to go, but only to Rough Trade in Bristol. I'm particularly after Pale Saints and Jansen/Barbieri/Karn

I believe they're putting any unsold stock online on Saturday evening (previous RSD's you have had to wait a week before they were put online).

The only one that caught my eye was the Bastille release because I loved the double album, but I don't think I can actually get to any of the stores near me. Hoping it's purchasable online!

Bastille album is not listed as a limited edition, so I reckon you should be able to get it online somewhere on Saturday night. Try a few different shops online if you can't find it at your usual shop.

Support your local indie store! They need your help!

There's no Billie Eillish record listed on the official RSD website.

Actually, just checked again & the Eillish record is only released in the USA - although obviously as per the link posted earlier, you may be able to get it on an import.

Confused by that NME article cus it says it was written in March and RSD is in April.

It was supposed to be, it was delayed due to Corona.

Not sure if I'll go down myself, I can never really be arsed with queuing just to find everything you want gone.

I don't do physical copies anymore tbh, all my purchases are digital these days.  I know resident in Brighton have released some clothing merch though, so might look and see what I can get.  Likely to be an online order though, Brighton on a Saturday afternoon still isn't high on my list of stuff to do I'm afraid to say

I've got the collector bug too - I've missed going to my local record shop (Badlands) almost as much as gigs. On the plus side, I've saved a load of money during lockdown so I'm planning on a bit of a spending spree on Saturday!

Not a very exciting list for me this year, normally there's something that instantly jumps out to me or suitably obscure that sounds interesting, but can't spot much. 

Definitely not missing waking up steaming still and getting down to Soho for 8.30 and chain-smoking rollies outside Sister Rays for three hours. The worst year was my second in London, woke up at 7, walked all the way to the tube in an effort to sober up and on getting to Finsbury Park realising that I had left my wallet at home, twenty minutes away. Got to the queue an hour late, probably cost more in the additional queue time and one of the records I had my heart set on had sold out.

Last time I went (three years ago?) I had a pal with me and after an hour outside SR I left him in the queue to checkout Sounds of the Universe. Queued for 15 minutes, they had my records and matey had only moved a meter in the SR queue. SotU Threw in a nice tote bag that I use a lot too. Would highly recommend SotU for anyone going down. I used to go for SR because they updated their stocklist in the week running up, so you know how many they have in and if you'll need to get down there early.

On a separate note, picked up the Warchild 25 rerelease earlier, wasn't old enough the first time around, so pleased to get in there and bag it.

You spend ages queuing, then find the shop don't stock or have sold out of what you want (or you find out it was released in the US only), and if they do have it, it seems unreasonably priced. And if you go for it, the artist ends up releasing a non-RSD version of the same title a few months later and it's cheaper...

And these days, it seems to be re-issues of old stuff and picture discs, neither of which I'm interested in.

I have phoned up and they have told me what they have and how many.

One of the records I am after they have 1 and some only 8 copies. So think I have to be very early. I hate queuing so maybe my first and last RSD

Don't be discouraged - I reckon I have about a 90% strike rate of getting what I want & that's a small shop. If you can't get what you want, try a few different shops online Saturday night. Just don't buy from Ebay - it's the w*nkers that buy all the good stuff & then put it online that cause everything to run out too quickly.

RSD is a godsend to record shops - my mate who works in my local reckons they do about 1/4 of their annual business in one day! Without it many of them wouldn't survive.
