What jobs won't be viable by October if all restrictions are lifted at that point and everyone has been jabbed?

I'm not saying it won't be viable by October per se, but I think the theatre industry could well take a long time to get properly going again. Not so much in the West End, where the big, long-running musicals should be able to up and start again as soon as they're able, but smaller and regional theatres are reliant on touring shows, which take a lot of organisation, logistics, pre-planning etc. which are far harder/less likely to have been undertaken during the last year or so, especially with almost no certainty around an end date.

Usual tabloid leaks. with the thrilling prospect (according to The Sun) of being able at some point next March to visit the three remaining clothes retailers, so as to buy a lovely new outfit to sit in at home. Followed by meeting with one other household outside at Easter. I'm practically wetting myself with excitement.

Meanwhile, apparently overnight stays are off until June (if we're lucky - the Government will probably stall and string the suffering out beyond that.) Pubs by September? Any interesting cultural event April 2022?

and let's have ebery single child back in school and licking each others faces. What could go wrong?

Really does sum up what is likely to be a very disappointing announcement for a lot of us. Meeting one household outside when it’s still constantly raining. Great!

I agree with this. Being too cautious now. It's ridiculous

All sense of "not one second longer than necessary" has melted away to "well probably just keep doing something like that for a while becuase it'll help".

After the over 50s are done, the negatives of lockdown outweigh the positives IMO. We should be looking to reopen a lot faster.

Is it possible they’re underplaying the plans in all these leaks?
Spaffer likes nothing more than being popular and to show up on Monday with better news than most are expecting would put a spring in his step - and a bounce in the polls.

There’s some truth in that but equally there will be summer to start getting stuff together, plus all the cancelled shows from last year that are ready to go, plus you have stand-ups, smaller bands and smaller 1/2 person plays that don’t need that level of production, all competing for slots. Almost every comic I know has written a new show in lockdown and wants to go tour it.
Actually think the west end may struggle more as it relies so much on completely selling out shows and does that with lots of foreign tourism and people on business trips, which won’t be happening half as much now people are seeing it’s not necessary.

Think that is quite optimistic but let’s hope. Would be strange to actively brief newspapers with different information all week though.

So, govt not going to make a final decision before Monday and until they have got all the data, meanwhile briefing their newpaper mates all week.

Well, they're not making any final decisions apart from the very first relaxations. That's why it looks like they're doing it right this time.

I don’t think so, as we get closer to Monday the leaks will become more like the real thing. The leaks are increasingly showing a cautious approach which is the right one, we want to make sure we stay out of lockdown once we come out of it and never have to go back into one.

Of course, following the data means that if hospitalisations fall off a cliff by the end of March, then we can probably open up more quickly. If not, it could take as long as some of the more pessimistic scenarios. We won't do anything "just in case". We hopefully will follow the data.

It will probably be a mixture of different data points not just cases for example. I can’t see them publishing a roadmap and speeding it up just because of the risks that would involve politically. But if they set out a firm schedule then people can start to plan and have some things to look forward to. If these leaks are true then the government are taking the right approach.

If that leak is true then we’re going to be in tier 4 (minus outdoor sport) in April even with all over 50’s offered a vaccine?! Diabolical.

Do the government not realise that this will lead to a lot of people saying “fuck this” and to start meeting their family and friends anyway, potentially indoors. They need to be reasonable and give people covid secure places to meet up.

The idea that it will be a criminal offense to visit my partner even beyond the date when it looks like all over-40's will be vaccinated is a genuine disgrace. If they truly want to keep it to outdoor mixing for the time being could they not at least let non-cohabiting couples form support bubbles?

Yeah these are all valid points. I may be being slightly skewed by the fact that the manager of where I work (large 'traditional' theatre in London but not West End) said in his latest e-mail to staff that even if things reopen then the calendar for the rest of the year is still currently empty. Also I mentioned the West End more for the fact that the technical setups etc. are still, presumably, in situations and ready to go, rather than the financial aspect of it.

I wonder if a lot of theatres will go slowly at first but then all out for panto season. A risky approach...

*THIS* is the key to controlled mass events like festivals re-opening.

For festivals it's perfect.

The cost of the event is already high so the extra test cost can be built into the pricing model.

It's quick.

It's reliable.

Some festivals in 2021 should now go ahead.

Think the issue for something like this is the accuracy. Say you got Glastonbury tickets and you get to the festival and they deny you. That would be worse than not getting a ticket. At that point, Glastonbury are out of pocket, you're out of pocket.

I personally think that once everyone is 2 jabbed up we should need them but for the interim its fine.

    • Maybe you need a groovy mayor who can get you the money.   Anyway, looks like mayors going to get a whole load of fiscal devolution and greater powers...so best everyone gets one, a decent one, and get a load of Madchesterism.

    • Another great weekend with family and friends.  We spend most of our time between Obelisk, and second stage due to having young children.  Overpass, Florence Road, Nathan Evans, David Byrne and Alex James were the highlights for me.  Quite enjoyed a dance to Gok Wan on the Saturday too.   Certainly feeling the Latitude blues this week and looking forward to next year.   Also looking forward to all the predictions for next year in the 2027 chat.   Hope everyone had a great festival.
    • How much is Burnham's success down to Manchester getting a shitton of investment for public transport infrastructure?   There's no doubt he did the work, but the money dumped into Manchester for him to achieve that was huge - the most of any infrastructure project outside London ever. Did that need a mayor, or just the money?
