I wonder if the countries who have decided not to use it in over 65's will now backtrack on that?

You'd be pretty pissed if you were above 65 in these countries & seeing how the UK is getting on with vaccinations wouldn't you?

Highly doubt that. Skepticism here in Europe is to big, specially in France, but also Germany and even here.

Most countries i think go after recommendations made by EMA/EU.

But at least some countries now are taking their luck into their own hands, heard that Northern Italy provinces

like Venice, Friuli or Emilia and some others want to order their own vaccines now and also Austria

made an additional deal with Moderna for getting 6 Millions of them in the second quarter of the year.

Can’t see a single headline confirming this WHO good news yet - strange as they all seem to get on the ‘negative’ news the second it comes out.

Yes, but the BBC have to report on things that matter.  Like that super funny lawyer zoom cat filter thing.  That's the news we need to see, not something that could actually help over 65s who have had the AZ vaccine and were worried.

The EMA said it was ok to use in 65+ though?

Actually, the EMA have approved it for over 65s with a 12 week gap between doses. Its the vaccination committees in the various countries that have decided to wait for more data. Part of that is driven by the fact we have feck all OX/AZ vaccine anyway (Ireland got 35,000 doses for this week...Scotland does more than day in a day!). So, faced with a supply issue, we may as well use the one that has stronger supporting data for the over 65s and use the OX/AZ one to finish vaccinating younger healthcare staff. I'd expect it to change in a few weeks when new data arrives and supply of the OX/AZ shot improves. Ireland like Austria has extra Moderna doses coming (not all EU countries could afford it so there was room to order more than the per capita allocation that was available for other vaccines).

that`s right, but they also said there was not enough data and they played the decision to each country.

And Germany, as I remember it right, said before the EMA (there was also this obscure article in Handelsblatt

and Bild where you could smell the skepticism) that if there is not enough data for all 65+ we won't use it.

Then it became quasi a domino game, where nobody would take a risk and decide against Germany and

against all this skepticism. So it seemed that they followed the EMA, but wanted to stay on the safe side.

Think this is amazing news - paging @Toilet Duck

Nice! Firstly mirrors pretty much what Pfizer published on Monday showing that while there is a reduction in SA variant targeting antibodies after vaccination, it's not non-existent. Also now re-opens the discussion on whether to offer a single shot to those that have been previously infected. If so, should it be later in the year as they already have some protection, or should that protection be shored up now is the next question (that's a massive boost there above naturally acquired immunity). Need to see this translated into clinical outcomes as that is the real test, but again, it's all pointing in the right direction.

I think as Germany went before the EMA with their concerns it was rather clear that many countries would follow their advice, rather than the EMA. But as you say as there are more data and supply of the AZ available things will change rather fast. Austria is based on the AZ, so the vaccine plan had to change with the supply issues which means Pfizer for the old population and the AZ for vulnerabel and also for those working in high risk jobs. but we will see how it will turn out, they said 2 Million vaccinations by easter and the big question remains how this pans out that by summer everyone should has been vaccinated, maybe others like Moderna will be a good help for that.

Yeah, we've had to pivot our roll out as well (though they will still use OX/AZ for over 65s if there is no other option), but Pfizer and Moderna now being used for older population instead (had to open new vaccination centres for GPs with fewer than 200 older patients as they can't send vaccine to GPs only for half it not to be used, so they are bundling their practices together to do more people). Those with more older patients are just getting the Pfizer/Moderna vaccines straight to their practices. OX/AZ was the main part of our mass vaccination strategy too, but we hadn't planned on having any until March at the earliest, so at least it's here ahead of time, even if it is smaller amounts. Looks like Pfizer capacity has increased a lot though as our scheduled deliveries before the end of March are now higher than they were a few weeks ago and are making up for the shortfall in OX/AZ deliveries. J&J should roll out around Easter hopefully which will add another option to the mix and will probably shake up the vaccination timetables even more since it will probably be used as a 1 shot strategy to vaccinate younger people. Might even be the best option for those previously infected if the Moderna data above is anything to go by!
