For what it’s worth the parents in my team at work are expecting schools to not reopen on the 8th. I suspect they aren’t alone with those thoughts.

If Wales and Scotland do and cases are low, I dont see the argument for not reopening them by the 8th at this stage. But let's see what happens in 11 days! At the least they should reopen primary schools fully.

I think they will be using Scotland and Wales as a test case.

With the current plan to open for Primary and 11/13 on the 8th.

But if they see spikes/increases during the time Scotland and Wales go back first they will can it until more vaccinations have taken place

"the challenge and scrutiny is not undertaken by non-experts on social media or a music forum for that matter."

So us under-educated and inexpert participants in this experiment are not allowed to even question what is being injected into our bodies? We are supposed to accept that the expert scientists (and the politicians and "philanthropists" who also dictate our lives) know what is best and have our best interests at heart? Some of us are not so naive, we question everything. if it makes us look paranoid so be it. If it makes you any happier I'm quite willing to state that the vaccines on offer at the moment are more than likely safe, effective and not worth being worried about, there's no guarantee of course, and if there was a problem long-term you could justify the introduction as being necessary in this "emergency" situation.

The bottom line is a question of trust, Do you trust Matt Hancock?  Nadhim Zahawi?  Patrick Vallance? I get bad vibes from all of them - not very scientific I know,  The only one that comes across well to me is Chris Whitty he seems like a good guy but even then I have doubts due to his Gates connection. You think I'm crazy, believing in outlandish conspiracies, we need a way of quantifying if my views are right or wrong, This thread is titled "when will this shit end"

Except, the alternative to the vaccine is, at some point, inevitably getting COVID. So if we're going possible conspiracy stuff, do you trust Xi Jinping? Do you trust that COVID was really caused by someone eating a bat and not an accident (or deliberate) at a Chinese biolab?

There's potential conspiracy on both sides, but unless you lock yourself away for ever, you're either going to take a vaccine or you're going to get COVID.

I don't really get why everyone (generally) is flying off the handle about foreign holidays currently. I would happily not go abroad for the next year if the trade-off was that we could do go to the pub/gym/small gigs instead. That would have a far greater positive impact on my day to day life.

I mostly care about having friends round at home more than anything else, but then I'd take holidays over the pub, but that's only if stuff in holiday destinations is open. We do one trip a year where we go play all the best escape rooms in a given European city/country. We've played most the good UK ones (and European ones are, largely, better). But being able to go to Barcelona holds no interest for us if just the beaches are open but the escape rooms are closed!

80+ group might have more people who are ill or on medication and can't take it straight away? Or more people who are housebound?

maybe more difficulties getting there at 80+? Could be those are the ones they're still needing to get to at this point

Ye perhaps and element of this. The Scottish figure for 80+ is 97 percent of them having had the first dose and I expect that to increase still.

I dont see the social contract for sticking the rules to last past all over 50s having a jab . If deaths massively reduce because of the vax programme, people will just household mixing anyway

That could be a problem though. If we go back to Tier 1 restrictions at that point, but the social contract breaks down, and people are just not giving a damn any more, we are in some economic trouble. Because the people out there ignoring the rules will be making the people still following the rules scared to go out. And those people need to be out to have the economy working. Plenty of people will be comfortable going to pubs and getting table service or restaurants where they will be seated apart from other people, but that comfort will go away if a load of other people decide they don't give a fuck and forgot about keeping distance, not speaking to strangers and so on. There's a real balance here.

There does seem to be a belief by many on this forum that, on the whole, people are staying in and not socialising purely out of an altruistic desire to keep the vulnerable safe. I think that's entirely wrong. I think if anyone under 60 literally couldn't get ill from COVID at all, chances of maintaining a lockdown would be close to zero. Yes, it's rare younger people get hospitalised with it, and even rarer that they die. But they do. And plenty of people are scared of being that person and that's why they are following the rules. Not because they're so altruistic.

I also genuinely think that anyone who has had a close friend or family member that is younger and had a bad but not hospitalising bout of COVID will be happy to wait a couple of months to get the vaccine themselves before going down the pub. Because it can be really fucking horrible, even if it doesn't hospitalise you.  After a year of basically isolating ourselves, the one good thing most of us can say is that at least we've not had COVID. Plenty of people won't want to give up on that now, for the sake of a couple of months. And that will only be exacerbated if there's people out there going "well I don't care any more, I'll do what I want". They'll just stay in instead of doing socially distanced pub/gigs/etc.

(And good luck if the thing you want to go to is booked or promoted by a normal person like me that runs gigs in their spare time because there's fuck all money in it any more and so promoters have day jobs - we're not going to risk putting on socially distanced or COVID-secure events if you're going to ignore the rules and we're literally going to get fined for it. Yeah fuck that.)

Guess the Gov IT Team are too busy trying to fix the hotel booking website that they have forgotten to update the daily statistics!

Govt IT has actually been superb since last March. Furlough, etc. Done by in-house techies and not contractors.

Who is doing the not-working quarantine system I wonder?

I think the main issue is neither of the above... it’s mainly because it’s illegal.

Spin back to July and August last year and youngsters were out and about plenty.

I agree with this, their dashboard is brilliant these days, it gives so much information.

Spin back to July and August last year and youngsters were out and about plenty.

Pubs and restaurants were running at 50% capacity and yet they weren't full.

Frank Turner sold out the Leamington Assembly in 2019, 1000 capacity. Couldn't sell out two 100-capacity socially distanced gigs in the same venue.

If they're the only people out when things reopen, there will be a lot of bankruptcies straight off.

And at that point, we didn't have people going "well I'm going to ignore the rules and not socially distance at this socially distanced event/place".

I'm fully expecting us to start to open up again in March, and that March/April/May will be the period of lockdown in which I feel under the most restrictions. Because I won't have been vaccinated, but the outdoor world will be full of people who have been vaccinated and so don't give a fuck, and who don't care if they get COVID so don't give a fuck.

Now, me and my partner may just be anomalies in feeling that way, but I somehow doubt we're literally the only ones.
