does anyone know people that are going to have a "normal " Christmas ? in terms of numbers and visiting Elderly relatives ? I dont .... so hopefully not as bad as we fear ....

Well the hotel where I work in Cornwall is currently full until the end of the year with all guests being from tier 2 and 3 areas. My manager believes the best approach is to turn a blind eye and let guests drink and mix together in the bar. I have been told to serve guests alcohol whether eating or not, and not question if couples sit with each other. I have complained to the GM, and awaiting a response but if nothing is done I think I'm in my rights to get signed off with stress. It just doesn't sit well with me, and if the local community knew this was going on there would be hell to pay.

on balance if people do mix with families over that period it would mean that they weren't in the situations that they were mixing with others in different situations ..... so for example people won't be going to gyms , shops , hairdressers , nail bars , pubs often , and schools won't be open ..... so im trying to remain hopeful that we might not get the spike that is feared ...

Wait and see what the rules are in the lockdown. Good chance household mixing won’t be banned. Banning private gatherings has been a particular favourite of the UK government more so than in other countries.

social distancing can't be enforced in people's houses...but hopefully you're right. 

Most experts seem to think it's a really bad idea.

Tonight should have been our towns Yuletide evening. Shops open, mini funfair, food stalls, pubs open late, santas grotto,parades, street entertainers etc.   The kids love it.  Sadly of course all cancelled and instead Santa just toured the streets in the back of a horse and cart waving to the kids. He couldn’t even chuck sweets the way he usually does. Brought it home to me how much this whole thing must be affecting children, seeing their wee faces, shivering, hoping for a glimpse of Santa.  I can’t wait to see the end of this bastard year.

Neither can it in shops and supermarkets and between clients in close contact services and to some extent pubs ... although most are doing their best to be covid secure ( which doesnt mean safe ) any contact area is a risk .... They close pubs to lower risk and it seems to have an effect .... we will see ... maybe im clutching at straws

but most people wear masks...and they are supposed to be practising social distancing and it easier to do in those spaces. Are people really going to be that strict sitting in the same room for hours? talking, eating, drinking, laughing, no masks, windows closed, boom.

We’ve been told constantly throughout this that households mixing in homes is a primary source of transmission as people let their guard down so whilst hospitality places will be shut which is the other main one as people will be in homes in ideal conditions for a really contagious virus then it’s a recipe for disaster. You are then relying on all those people not breaking any of the rules in the build up or over the period by mixing with other households.

Everyone I know is doing the same thing...lying low from now til Christmas so they can see their family for a bit. My wife and daughter are in school til the 22nd though, so we’ve just postponed eating with anyone outside our household til New Year’s Day (10 days from when they stop mixing). Will meet briefly indoors with masks and hand washing to exchange gifts etc, but will wait to be indoors without a mask (case numbers are a lot lower here though than in some parts of the UK). Technically we are allowed to eat together indoors from this Friday, but we’ll wait to be safe. It’s only one year. I’ve a couple of mates with a table booked for food and pints on the 19th...normally there would be a huge gang of us at that, this year, nobody else will join them!

how is it in Ireland at the moment?...someone posted a map of europe on here the other day with countries coloured depending on how bad infection rate was (I think it was infection rate), and Ireland was looking good.

And as I said later I dont know anyone going to the full extent of the restrictions or anyone even having Christmas Dinner with someone outside their household ..... so hopefully this and the other things will balance somewhat ....... Im not daft enough to think that where it does happen its not a bigger risk .... Just that people probably dont have any intention of Killing Granny and will mitigate that  hopefully

I’m going to stay with my in laws from 23rd-27th. Household 1 will be my in laws and my girlfriend’s sister, household 2 will be me and Miss Afro. Household 3 will be Miss Afro’s grandparents (early 70’s and no medical conditions)

 

But they normally have massive family parties so that’s still stripped back by their standards.
