Stormzy, Gaz Coombes, Jorja Smith, Annie Mac, Jamie Cullum were all on the panel.

Of course, Stormzy spoiled his ballot by voting for his mum.

It is so difficult it would seem, first to choose a panel for such things as these awards and then to choose an actual winner. Many of us will agree or disagree. In the grand scheme of things it means nothing. There have been some exceptionally good recipients of this award (and a few duds).  Dave falls into that category (good recipients), IMHO. I'd have chosen someone not on the short-list to be honest.

Music is the most subjective of the art forms. It really is. There is so much music in the world, more than anyone could ever listen to in a thousand lifetimes. You know what I'm saying. Arguing about it is utter futility.

You should all listen to what I like, then I should dutifully listen to what you all like, then very quickly run out of time (life).

There might be worse dilemmas in this universe, though none so sweet.

Always found artists putting so much stock into these bullshit award shows to be pretty off putting. What's the value of them? There isn't, it's a bunch of grey old pricks who know nothing trying to make money for sponsors. Surely you make art to try and connect with an audience, these shows remove the audience from the question entirely and frame art as a competition where whichever anonymous dorks decide the awards become the ultimate arbiters of what's good. Tedious bullshit and I always lose a little bit of respect when even the best of the best like Kendrick get really drawn in to them.

I agree with the main point but you gotta get your music out there, I've discovered loads of great music in the past from these awards. Granted I've got my ear a bit more to the ground now so none of these albums came as a surprise but 10 years ago the mercury awards were a glance a little deeper for a 17 year old who got most his music from xfm.

Last night was such a good exhibition of performances as well I cant really knock it this year.

Bands have to pay the Mercury Awards for their album to be considered for this load of old shite.

Baffles me every year. Has done for 25 years.

"Awards" for music is fucking weird.

I dunno, if you're reliant on selling your music to make a living, this kind of endorsement's probably kind of useful.

Thats the only thing thats worthwhile. Well recorded performances. Although the last one of note for me was Amy Winehouse.

The fact that Back to Black lost out to the Klaxons sum up the value of these awards in artistic terms; the financial rewards are separate.

For the words of the profits were written on the studio walls.
