How did the Kaiser Chiefs get them to play Leeds?

I thought that documentary was ace. Gave a good sense of what they're about, and they seem to try to do things differently compared to the usual album/tour cycle. Always thought they'd headlined Coachella, not just played in the dance tent.

I thought RAM was decent, loved Get Lucky, Lose Yourself to Dance and Instant Crush.

I enjoyed the documentary and then re-watched it with my 10 y'o daughter WITHOUT the unnecessary Kayne sweary disrespectful bit.

Thought they could have made reference to some of the superb homemade "Harder Better Faster Stronger" videos out there.

I'm hopeful of it happening.

When people say reaction to RAM was muted, do you mean from the fan base? Because the album achieved critical acclaim. I enjoyed it but when you go back to Homework i can see why fans wouldn't get it. Never understood the hate for Human After All either.

RAM was a load of bloated, self indulgent shite. The epitome of style over substance. In contrast Alive 2007 is an amazing live record, but the truth is they haven't made a really good studio album in ages.

I watched the documentary too. It was pretty good, but towards the end it was full of deluded sycophants who think they can do no wrong. I mean that bit about the three microphones and Giorgio Morodor, what a lot of pretentious rubbish.

I always beat myself up over the fact i could have seen them and LCD Soundsystem (hopefully see them this year) at O2 Wireless but i only knew a few singles of each band back then and i was a teenager with little money back then. My main focus was seeing the White Stripes, so i never got a Sunday ticket :(

No chance. They are done as a touring act IMO. I've always been hopeful until I watched that BBC documentary. Coachella was a one-off; the work that went into that festival performance was massive and even though that was off the back of two successful albums, they took a huge amount of persuading (ie cash) to do it and they perceived it as a big risk for themselves. I can't see them taking that risk again, especially as they've got a legendary festival performance in the bag. All they can do is match the Coachella show.

I found that bit Daft (hehe) and Kanye manged to piss me off. Did nobody tell him it was a Daft Punk Documentary? Just talked about himself.

Alive 2007 was really a studio record though, wasn't it? ;)  Not original material though, I take your point.

They did tour off the Coachella performance though.  It's the use of live instrumentation that makes me think they might not tour again.  I certainly have no idea how they could tour RAM without having a lead singer, or being able to bring all their guests along with them.  It doesn't really lend itself to the pyramid, two robots and lights spectacle approach.

I'd be there in a heartbeat. The fact that RAM didn't really grab me doesn't matter to me.

The week or two after that 1 minute of Get Lucky came out on the screens at Coachella was the most musically excited I've been for years. I still get shivers watching it now. There was no way the album could ever have lived up to that.

That's the thing isn't it, do they need live instruments? I don't see why they do. They could easily use the masters to make reworked versions from RAM for a live show with all their other stuff. Any word on whether a new album could be on the way?

I don't know, but it does feel that however they did it, there would be some compromise.  Perhaps they just though "fuck it" and decided not to compromise at all. After all, neither Nile or Pharrell's live versions of Get Lucky were much good.

Thank you!

I think you'll get much better results if you don't ask for responses on an irrelevant thread.  This is considered spamming.

Self-flagellation is too good for you!

That was an awesome day.

Although LCD were a tad grumpy.

That's fair enough, I didn't mean to spam. I'm slightly behind my deadline so i thought i would seek out the most active threads instead of the inactive ones.

Apologies again!

This is a pointless thread - there is literally no indication whatsoever that Daft Punk will even play live next year, let alone headline Glasto. I think there's a decent chance they'll play again (after all, they don't need to play RAM especially as they never toured it), but they won't be headlining Glasto any time soon.

I saw them on the Alive tour at Wireless festival in Leeds in 2007, it was mind bending. I'm pretty sure tickets were on sale for ages though, they certainly didn't sell out in a hurry. Funny how a legend can build up...

Yeah I've seen LCD a few times and that was by far the worst I'd seen them (if you also went to the one in Leeds). They were on at something like 6pm, short set, fairly uninterested crowd.

That's where I would have seen them if i got the ticket. Hopefully i'll get to see them do a superb Other stage headline show this year.

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
