Last year was Paolo Nutini, Elton John, Spandeu Ballet, Ben Howard and Motörhead

yeah. Somewhere in there is either a porkie or bad information flows.

I guess it could be the same with Elton, tho he doesn't seem to have much of a problem booking in 200+ gigs almost every year for decades (which is a little different to the stones ).

All I can think of is that his management don't pass on the paltry offers from Glastonbury. Either that or they think he's so awful live they don't want him. He's not that bad is he? I'd expect they would have at least approached him.

nah, maybe it wasn't.

Everything about how the stones did and do stuff suggests that management might not pass something like Glasto up to the band. They wouldn't have had the control they like to have, and they wouldn't have the fee they'd normally have. And as a band they were well known for doing the most lucrative shows.

Add into that that management would get paid a share of everything they do, that management would be cutting their own wages by directing the band towards Glastonbury, as a Glastonbury show was likely to be at the expense of a show somewhere else.

So out of all the bands in the world, the stones are perhaps the least likely to have an offer passed thru to them to consider.

honestly, Jagger was joking, taking the piss...we're not seriously arguing about that comment are we? everyone around me in the crowd was laughing when he said that, i thought it was great between-song quip, nothing to compare to Elton John's pouty statement...

didn't he even look up at Eavis with a laugh too when he said it?

Wasn't it Ronnie that played a big part in persuading the Stones to do Glastonbury? I might be dreaming it but I'm sure he was the main driver from the band's side. Am sure NME were quoting him from Nov 2012 that he wanted the Stones to play.

You're right, I was listening to the bootleg of that gig on the way in to work this morning!

I thought as much had been said before they were booked and it came out that they had been chased for years.  I didn't realise Jagger had made a quip about it onstage, I can only assume it was a reference to the conflicting reports of whether they had been contacted.  

If I had to make a real guess, I'd say the sequence of events went something like this:

1. GFL chase The Stones for years.

2. Stones management doesn't pass on paltry offers to band.

3. Band gets asked about whether they're going to play Glastonbury, reply by saying they've never been asked.

4. Rumblings about the festival chasing The Stones grows, band gets wind of it and negotiations begin.

5. Band play, Jagger makes joke about having 'finally been asked'
