That's kinda what I think. Revealing Radiohead in the middle of a huge poster would have been a bit strange.

I dunno, I just think having such a huge band as a sub headliner is quite big news and worthy of a separate announcement.

Also, I think their announcement strategy has changed since then 2013. Headliners tend to get their own announcements now and I have NO DOUBT that if Rolling Stones were to headline next year, they wouldn't be lumped on a poster.

They used to give headliners separate announcements back then as well. It's always been a mix and quite often a headliner or big sub gets announced within the mix. There really is no 'normal' way of doing it.

As it seems we have more than enough suitable Other headliners on the poster already, I think it's got to be Pyramid sub to Adele, with Foals and Goulding subbing the other days, or a secret set which will remain unannounced. I feel that if they are subbing the Pyramid, they may get their own announcement due to it being a quite remarkable booking. Maybe it'll come once they've started touring again/have their new material out?

If they are announced as Pyramid subs it won't be billed as a co-headline but I'm sure they'd announce Radiohead as Very Special Guests or something similar.

I'm still hoping that Radiohead were back ups for 2016 if Adele couldn't play, and otherwise are in for 2017. It would fit why some would think they were playing this year, would be the sort of thing that could easily have peoples wires crossed and also would fit in with a likely bigger tour next year.

There is so much talk here about a big slot for Radiohead, but haven't they been known to do lower secret slots 2 or 3 times in the past? They are clearly a fan of them! I acknowledge that safety concerns are higher now though.

If these people had been around in 1997 they'd rather have had Celine dion play over radiohead, because she sold loads of records so 'would be a real coup for the festival'.

People's acceptance of adele is a fucking joke, frankly.

I'm on board with your rant, but to be fair to Adele, the acceptance of Muse and Coldplay is just as much of a joke. I don't see any reason to single her out. Coldplay and Muse haven't released a decent record (by their standards) for 10+ years at this point.

Oh aye, it truly is 3 festering turds at the top this year. But I got the impression most people are narked off about muse and coldplay, but accept adele because of her record sales and fame.

Adele does have a little more "indie" crossover than the pure pop stuff. I'm not a fan but she regularly gets featured in NME, has been nominated for a Mercury etc etc. If she was booked repeatedly I'd be pissed off, but as a one off booking I don't think it's any worse than the repeated bookings of Coldplay and Muse. 

It's not that any of the individual bookings by themselves are particularly bad, it's that the three of them combined are so dull and unimaginative.

One thing that's changed for the better since the nineties is that acts further up the bill no longer have to be of an "indie" nature.

You might not have had a nineties equivalent of Adele headlining, but our wouldn't have had Metallica, Kanye West or The Rolling Stones either.

Yeah that's true, although the Stones would have headlined at any point they wanted. But some of Adele's appeal does cross over into that sphere, as do Metallica's and Kanye's (who Pitchfork bloody love). I don't see it that much myself, I find her like a male equivalent of Sam Smith, but that's the way it is.

NME has been a fucking mess since the reboot so I don't think being featured in there really means anything. Zayn Malek was on the cover last week!

She's only playing based on record sales and fame. It's laughable to suggest she's an appropriate Saturday headliner. Even she admits she isn't!

Yes muse and coldplay are awful unimaginative bookings, but that doesn't somehow make adele become the great white hope. She's absolute shite.

The point is that it's quite nice not to have the entire bill dictated by a Zane Lowe / Evening Session / NME sensibility that indie is best and anything else is somehow inauthentic.  It just narrows the parameters. For every Radiohead on the Pyramid in 1997, there was also a Cast, an Ocean Colour Scene and a Dodgy.
