Think they were somewhat bailed out by RHCP. Never seen it so busy for a band before.

Sure but that's the point. Two of these - maybe even just Eminem - could carry the set of headliners for a year (probably will to some extent) so they could book a couple of cheaper yet current headliners and make interesting bookings elsewhere with the surplus.

This years festival may have three bondafide headliner-sized acts topping the bill but I actually think last year was a better year for headliners. I know that might initially appear somewhat counterintuitive but size really isn't everything . Sure, Foals and Biffy Clyro aren't the size of Kasabian and Eminem, but with their stellar live performances and (relatively) new material alongside, they were well worth the price of admission. Compare that to this year: Muse on an exclusive (after touring Drones everywhere over the last three years), Eminem (who seems so irrelevant I still can't believe he was booked) and Kasabian, which I think is a good booking.

It's wonderful that this year we don't have to re-cycle the entire 'is Band X' big enough to headline?' argument. However, I do hope that FR continue to acknowledge, as they've done so effectively in recent years, and bump up these 'smaller headliners' in spite of whether they're considered a household name and have headlined Festival Y or played Venue Z. I can only provide my own anecdotal examples but in every year I've attended Reading Festival, apart from 2015, it's been the 'smallest' headliner that have really made me aching to come back the following year, Biffy Clyro in 2013, Queens of the Stone Age and Paramore in 2014 and Foals and Biffy Clyro in 2016.

I hope we see Royal Blood, Kendrick Lamar, Tame Impala or Bring Me The Horizon in 2018.

I noticed RandL haven't updated their spotify playlist? Last announcement they released an updated playlist on the day of the announcement. (And that seems to be the trend most announcements)

Maybe there's going to be another announcement sooner than we thought...

If you think about it, they've made an announcement that consists of a lot of lesser known bands. Logic would dictate that the festival would look to get the playlist updated, as soon as possible, so people then listen to and get to like said bands. The amount of times I've see "who are they" is ridiculous.

Call it grasping at straws if you wish, it just find it strange.

Yeah I guess but not sure there's a band who jumps out to headline this year who is a bump up. Probably a year too early for Royal Blood, BMTH would need a new album cycle. Are Bastille big enough?

Not groundbreaking stuff I know, but MTV Rocks have just had a playlist of bands confirmed so far for 2017, the info bar said 'some great acts have just been announced for Reading and Leeds Festival this year including You Me At Six, Mallory Knox, PVRIS and The Pretty Reckless'.

PVRIS were selling their own London date(s) yesterday so would make sense for them to be left out of this announcement.

Still wouldn't expect PVRIS to be part of the top 3 though, so Sunday is still missing sub/third potentially

They'll be low main stage most likely which is fine as they still have stuff to add for that but I don't think we are missing a sub or 3rd unless I've missed something.

We have like nothing for Sunday as far as I know. Haim maybe 3rd and Blossoms maybe subbing NME but no NME headliner or sub (and tbh I doubt HAIM have been moved from 3rd NME to 3rd Main after a year of doing nothing but who knows)

But do you have that confirmed or is it just looking, hoping and thinking this can't be correct?

BMTH went from 5th main to sub in two years albeit with a new album but I expect HAIM will have one too. Did HAIM pull out last year as not on the poster lineup?

I'm worried for everyone going that Giggs is your NME headliner.

Yeah Haim pulled out of all EU fests to finish their album (http://www.efestivals.co.uk/news/16/160821a.shtml). Maybe its just me but I think personally booking artists higher because their album may be good is a bit silly. Plus afaik their isn't a release date yet for the album, so it could potentially not even be out till after summer.

It's rare that you get acts playing the NME stage in consecutive years so would think Blossoms and Giggs will be one after the other on main. Just how high that is, I dread to think.

Blossoms I think is on main but I could easily see Giggs headlining the 1xtra stage instead.

I know it was mentioned briefly earlier about Stormzy potentially subbing but he's 4th on the poster at V Fest so I can't see him playing very highly at R/L if at all. Nobody's mentioned the Chainsmokers recently, would they fit in under muse? I'm starting to think it's more and more likely that Kaiser Chiefs could sub however.

We might see a pit announcement tomorrow night... (Or tonight depending on your outlook on life)... On the Rock show.

Surely soon as usually been by now, that's what's stopping me thinking BT and ATDI are lockup or pit headliners although it's hard to fit in BT if they aren't

    • Another Kraftwerk one for me today, as just back from seeing them.
    • Completed my 2026 survey. Put down Super Furry Animals as my most wanted for next year but suspect the moment has gone for that. Popped a big shopping list in the box for who else you would like to see. 🙂
