The crowd at the top third of the field lost interest pretty quickly particularly during the slow numbers and either drifted away or started talking. The rest of the crowd appeared to have a good time though. I thought she did pretty well in the circumstances but definitely not a Pyramid headline act for me.

Watching it on TV I think this sums it up.

Didn't disgrace herself, and as a sub was to be commended.

Not a "classic"  headline performance though imo.   I am a bit "meh" about the band though so maybe it's that?  *shrugs*

Watching it on tv, I didn't think all that much of it, didn't dislike it but wasn't amazed like I was by the trio's of headliners for the past 2 years.

But good on them for giving her a shot, festivals are gonna need to look to younger artists in the next few years and I think this will be seen as 'getting the ball rolling' in terms of promoting newer/younger artists up to headliners, something that has stopped quite a bit in recent years.

Possibly the worst headline act at any festival I have ever seen, just about every single song sounds the exact same, then you got her rolling about like a distressed goat locked in a garden centre, all very weird and not headline material at all.

Haha this

I was at the front and loved every second. Fantastic set, great engagement, songs everyone knows and can sing along too. Totally won me over and I think she's to be commended given she had only a fortnight to prepare!

Bit like tonight really, although tonight is worse..... Edited by lightning1000

I'm not a fan and I thought she nailed it.

Seriously guys, do you just want someone plonked behind a mic stand? One inkling of someone with a bit of personality and it's all too weird for you...

I loved every second of the set - she was so up for it it was superb and the small things like the head dress being taken and given as a 'gift' was brilliant.

So many round us had tears in their eyes.

thought it was brilliant and the best of the three (watched on tv)

tough to put anything together at short notice etc so was a Sub stage show but a headline performance

she has moved up the festival and you could tell it was a privilege for her to be there

They played Dogs Days and You Got The Love on 6 Music during our journey home, definitely got a lump in the throat!

Easily the best of the Pyramid headliners. Not like she had much competition from the others, but she proved that she absolutely deserved the spot, replacement or not. Wonderful set, really great atmosphere in the crowd where I was stood. Definitely made the right call seeing her as I'll see Hot Chip later on their tour but that felt like a really special performance.

Only complaint - where was Kiss With a Fist? Sort it out Flo! :P

So this is interesting...

Bands releasing their debuts since 2006, we've only had less than ten new headliners created.

http://www.musicweek.com/news/read/five-new-mainstream-festival-headliners-created-over-past-decade/062206

But going further from that, if we're gonna comprise a list of acts given a shot at headlining a major fest in the past ten years the list isn't that great...

Florence and the machine, Biffy clyro, Calvin Harris, avicii, Mumford and sons, Noel Gallagher, Snow Patrol - and a few more who've headlined download but unlikely to headline any other UK Fest

It's strange that (in what I believe) is the strongest time of the festival market, major festivals really do shy away from taking a gamble and giving an act a shot.

Tl;DR - just adds to the already existing question of why wasn't Florence headlining in the first place?

I think one of the reasons for this is how fractured music fans are nowadays. People are generally more critical I believe and there's less chance of a large group of people all uniting behind one artist.

Flo is a good example since there's still a large number of people that cannot stand her. Same goes for the likes of Bastille and Foals who seem to be in the mix. There's this idea of what a headline act should be and we are generally less willing to accept someone new into that group. I don't like Mumford at all but I applaud Glastonbury for taking the chance and giving them that slot. It's a shame Flo didn't get that chance but it'd be nice to see them hand someone fresh the opportunity next year.

There's also the fact that more older bands seem to be crawling out of the woodwork than we saw 10-15 years ago and they generally equal money.

I think the fact Mumford were getting headline spots across the world the year they played Glastonbury probably helped them get the headline.

Flo was a bump up under circumstance, but she's a headliner now! Proved to be one as well!

Even though I wasn't 'wowed' by her headline show I think she's done enough to warrant top billings now!
