Taping off areas for friends?

So, I know this is a yearly topic but what's peoples opinions on the matter?

Normally our mates all go up together on the Tuesday night so we get in pretty early Wednesday morning and get a boss spec in Pennard Hill so it's no worries. Last year we had 3 friends who couldn't come until the Thursday so just took there two tents and set them up, no problem.

However, this year we went for the national express coaches that where released earlier, and now we have different mates going at different times, with only two going on the Tuesday night (they got normal tickets) and 8 of us setting off Wednesday morning... is it acceptable for them to tape off an area and say "Sorry, this is for friends coming soon?" Or is that unacceptable for some?

It's either that or we all chip in for a massive trolly that can fit 4 2/3 man tents in! Tough ask.

I think you know what people are going to say. If you're thinking you're going to tape off an area in Pennards or one of the other popular campsites then it's unacceptable and you might find your tape being ripped down. If you are going to camp in one of the generally less crowded fields it probably won't be a problem.

Here come the righteous Glastonbury rule makers ready to tell what is and isn't in "the spirit of Glastonbury"!

As you can probably guess from the responses in here some people won't like your idea but ultimately it's your call.

My recommendation would be to get the Tuesday guys to take as many tents as possible and put them up for y'all before you get there. Not ideal but better then having to move them all later when someone decides to camp in your saved spot.

yeah the tuesday travelers take as many tents as they can carry and enough drink and everything else to last them till 2pm wednesday and the wednesday travelers bring everything else.

If you cant bring them all put them up with plenty of breathing space between each, then reconfigure them when all the tents are there wednesday and hope they all fit in.

I've never understood people who tape off there camp its always been very anti social to me,''no you cant walk through here, this is our land, your not welcome'' sort of thing, expecting me to walk round instead,I've always torn them down.

I don't have a problem with anyone bringing a couple of two man tents for friends though as long as they don't take the piss and put up loads,That's a bit unfair.

It may be fine for a group of people to put up a tent or somehow block an area for one person coming late, but for two people to try and rope off an area for another eight is just shitbiscuitry of the highest order (at any festival).

Either they should set up all the tents (but still be prepared for some unfavourable comments/looks) or they should wait for all the others to turn up.

At the end of the day, now people are getting in a queue at midnight on Tuesday in order to get onsite and put their own tents up in their favourite spaces it would seem disingenuous to shortcut all of that hard work and tape areas off.

yeah the reasonable / less dicky thing to do would be for the people arriving first to bring as many tents as they can, lay them all out on the ground when they arrive (maybe even with a bit more room between than you'd need if more tents are on their way) and set them up one by one. taping an area off isn't gonna work as when it starts filling up people will simply tear it down

I heard Glastonbury was bad for this from friends that have been before (this being my first)

Strange thing. I think its up to the people that are arriving first to set up all the tents in your group. Pain in the arse but just get on with it.

If you dont take others set yours up, and if someone wants to set up on a spot you have earmarked just ask if they can leave it free. If they say no so be it.

If its starting to fill up, and considering they have just done the same walk or further as you, dont even ask as its a bit off.

Taping areas off so people cant even walk past your tent is weird and should be ripped down asap!

I think taping off areas is pretty unfriendly and antisocial. It's even worse when people have the tape up during the festival so no one will walk through 'their' area! I would just take and pitch the others' tents or wait for everyone else to arrive and just camp somewhere else. My friends will all be arriving at different times this year so we will have to play it by ear. In previous years we've been in two or three small groups in the same field and it was fine, but I don't like spending too much time around the campsite anyway.

What's so great about Pennards anyway? Never camped there and always had an awesome time regardless.

Doesn't help that Pennards is probably the least likely place to find someone who will respect a request to leave a space free and the most likely to find someone who will just tear down the tape and pitch up.

in my mind putting mates tents up is fine but taping off an area is out of order. most people go to glasto for the sense of freedom and taping an area off as if to say "I claim this as my own" is the complete opposite!
