Perhaps. I certainly don't think it's a case of the old 'maybe you lot like it but this place doesn't represent everyone' applies here though, they're huge and how much they transcend the metal audience is proven.

Metallica tell MTV they'll do their new single at the award show and then do this instead.

RHCP are one of the worst live acts around..

i need only point to the fact that iow saturday night has sold out before the other days as evidence for the fact that RHCP are a massive pull for most people and a huge band

p.s I fully support Metallica headlining Glastonbury, but they're as mainstream style as the next. I think they'll get a crowd of a similar size to U2's, which wasn't massive.

I'm sorry but you need to do more than that to prove that they are a massive pull for most people and a huge band. This shows that them and their undercard on a saturday night is slightly more appealing than biffy (an up and coming headliner) and kol (a headliner many are bored of) with their undercards on a friday/sunday. It's an arguement but hardly conclusive

I watched from under a friends gazebo on Kidney Mead, there were plenty of others up their too but don't remember how big the crowd was.

We only watched U2 to "tick them off the list", it was close to camp & we weren't going to Shangri La that nigh due to the rain, were planning a big night the next day & no other bands on we fancied.

It was pretty quiet. I do wonder how differwnt things would have been with different weather. Radiohead and U2 were largely regarded as dissapointing whilst elbow and coldplay the following day with clear skys were largely praised. Lots of other factors of course though...

Robert Plant would be good on the main stage for the Metallica day. Can see Placebo playing as well.

Bit weird Lana Del Ray sharing the stage that day though.

What's the latest on this Neil? Eavis said the 3rd headliner couldn't be announced yet for 'contractual reasons'. Is this a Sonisphere thing? Why would they not want Metallica confirmed yet? Surely Glastonbury already being sold out wouldn't hinder their sales at all.

OR could it be someone else? To me that makes more sense. Probably reading too much into it but I don't get what difference it would make Glastonbury announcing them now or in a couple of weeks?

Its not "properly" sold out yet though. I expect if they are playing will be announced after the resales as people won't technically be paying to go & see Metallica at G rather than Soni & thus them lose money from punters.

Surely Sonisphere don't think a very significant number of people would pay £220, go through the process of registering and successfully manage to get tickets (on top of the hoards trying anyway) all on the strength of 1 band when the same punter could just see them at Sonisphere though? Besides, surely anyone who wanted to see Metallica that much would already have bought Sonisphere tickets - and even if they hadn't the advertisement on prime time TV can only be beneficial to them.

It just seems to me the more likely option is that there's something (someone?) more to it than that. Possibly wishful thinking as I'm not particularly enamoured with them playing.

If you were a large festival and had invested significant amounts of money, time and effort, would you be willing to gamble on thoughts and possibilities? I think not.

Do what I've done, accept Metallica are on and look forward to a night in other areas of the festival, Arcade Fire aside, I'm most excited for my unknown Saturday night!
