I think one of the issues with the eagles is that i'm not sure that younger generations (and i don't just mean teenagers) would have felt compelled to listen to them. Most of my friends gave themselves a musical education at some point, if it wasn't given to them by their parents, of the likes of the stones, bowie, the who, stevie wonder, elton john, even fleetwood mac and many more.

I just don't think the eagles, despite sales at the time, are considered in the same way and would be included in that. Someobdy like Neil Young might not initially either but there would be enough critics and influencers saying 'listen to this seminal album' and you'll love him. There are plenty of people old enough to know the eagles well on here but i haven't heard many (any?)saying that...

I know people are saying that these headliners arent big enough etc... but you do have to take into account 1 who is available and 2 who they were actually after. Its been made certain that Fleetwood Mac were one and the rumours point to Prince as the other wanted one. (Plus i know Depeche Mode were wanted too).

Eavis i suppose could have tried getting KOL back to make you all happy.....

I don't believe that either Kasabian, even though they're a TBC on here, or the Eagles will headline.

Sometimes everything I'm hearing from good sources is telling me a name, and i'll list it as tbc but I still don't believe it. This is not one of those occasions.

Kasabian are headlining. I rarely get as certain as this.

Eagles (no 'the' </pedant>) I'm far less sure about at this moment in time. Currently I don't have much to suggest it's them, but I have more of any substance to suggest it's them than I do for any other act.

I do know that Glasto were defo chasing Prince, but I also know that he's not playing in the slot he was pencilled in for - so either the day he's playing has changed or he's not playing at all.

yup, I agree. Some older acts for whatever reasons get to impact onto today's youngsters, but for some reason that doesn't seem to have happened with the Eagles.

There's a lot in this view of them having disappeared down some sort of memory / credibility hole in recent years, but they still play pretty big venues when they tour, no?

BBC4 definitely had an Eagles night a few months back - though it had the unfortunate effect of showing that nearly every single one of them has morphed into a stony-faced Ron Swanson-esque charisma-vacuum.

Yeah - I don't doubt that they only sell tickets to people of pensionable age.

They're not really a 'strength-in-depth' band where you should be checking out their albums - they just have a couple of massive-selling greatest hits collections. More in common with ABBA or Queen than someone like Bowie.

Though their success wasn't just limited to the 1970s. Whichever version of their hits that they released in the mid-to-late 90s - the one with an actual picture of a desert highway on the cover - was also a massive, massive seller.

I think the Eagles lack a classic or seminal album for younger people to use as a reference point. The fact their greatest hits sold such a massive numbers of units is pretty telling. To me they sound like incredibly dated, bloated dad rock that just doesn't appeal to me on any level.

Seems a little self-indulgent of Eavis to book them on the strength of them being his favourite band. Still, it's his festival I guess and I wonder how many more there'll be with him at the helm? Maybe a gift to himself isn't too much to ask for years of sacrifice and dedication.

That said, if true I'll be somewhere else, for sure.

My ex wife dragged me to see then in the early naughties at sheffield arena, they started off with an accapella song and that set the tone to be honest, they didn't get anyone out of their seats till the 2nd half after they had a break and even then it was for the odd song.

Thanks god for other stages and headliners.

I'm pretty sure if you got a group of say 4,000 music fans between the ages of 18 - 30 and asked them which they'd prefer listening to 'One Direction' or 'Eagles' at least 3,879 of them would say 'One Direction' if you'd asked them who was lamer they'd probably say 'Eagles' thats how BADLY I believe 'Eagles' go down with the younger crowd.

    • Very different in terms of time of game,  yet remember how excited I was before the first game in Euro 2016 having grown up not sure I would ever see wales in an international tournament. That day scraped a win against Slovakia and was just happy to see wales score and win at a tournament, little did I know we would finish in the top 4. Hope Scottish fans get the same experience.
