Maybe for you. Not for me. All part of it for me, one of the things I love about music is irrational likes and dislikes, prejudices, dismissing stuff out of hand, the emotional pull of a band you love even when the new album is pony, the narrative behind it, that's why I live it for it. How dull it would be if it were just reduced to a collection of notes and chords.

And one of the things I love about music is how it can surprise you. How suddenly an artist who you never thought much of can produce something that you adore.

Don't get me wrong, I love being fanatical about a band but "dismissing stuff out of hand" is much like cutting your nose off to spite your face. What gems you could be missing out on!

it's an interesting point ICGenie, I've been thinking about this all evening, I'm going to consider it some more in the morning, but you know, you might be right, I shall ponder it. Thank you.

True. One case in point is my husband - never liked Kate Bush. Found her voice too squeaky and irritating. Now he thinks Ninth Wave is one of the best pieces of music ever made.

I do have certain vocalists who I can't stand and I find that a major stumbling block with enjoying some music. If I don't like a voice I really struggle to enjoy a song.

We could have a big discussion about Fish v H ?

Considering the Glastonbury performance was in the middle of their 360 tour, it's not surprising they finished the way they did, as that's how they finished pretty much every gig on that tour (minus Out Of Control). And on the previous tour they used to end with '40' - while I love this song, it literally goes nowhere and just fades out. Not exactly a bang either. I feel that U2 at Glastonbury (for a U2 fan) should've been something special, and I came away from the pyramid at the end of the night feeling nothing but disappointment and soggy feet

The way you describe it is the kind of the way I feel about it. I had a great time, but there is was something missing. I've already mentioned that there should have been (IMO) changes to the set. I've been thinking about it and I might have gone for something like this:

1. Zoo Station

2. Even Better Than the Real Thing

3. Until the End of the World

4. I Will Follow/Out of Control

5. New Year's Day

6. City of Blinding Lights

7. Elevation

8. Beautiful Day

9. Stay (Faraway, So Close!)

10. Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - Sing-along & stripped down

10. Angel of Harlem/Desire - Sing-along & stripped down

11. Bad

12. Ultra Violet

13. Sunday Bloody Sunday

14. All I Want is You

15. One

16. Pride (In The Name of Love)

(Encore)

17. Where The Streets Have No Name

18. With or Without You

19. Walk On

I had a similar experience. Didn't like Kate Bush for the same reasons. Then my wife (to be) asked for Aerial for her birthday. I now think Sky Of Honey is one of the best pieces of music ever. I like some of the prior work, but it's her post-Bertie work that really does it for me.

While it is a cracking set list, I think they obviously wanted to play more of 'No Line' and a maybe a few different ones from Achtung Baby, although I think Ultraviolet would've been better than Until The End of The World. Plus they almost needed Vertigo and Get on Your Boots to be in there, played with Elevation and Beautiful Day, just to satisfy the recent 'hit' count.

Either way, it was fantastic and disappointing at the same time. I actually enjoyed being at the top of Wembley seeing them in 2010 more than this, when I was quite close to the front. Now I have the urge to watch Slane Castle again....

  • 3 weeks later...

95% of people refused to download it. For free.

Refused implies a decision though doesnt it. At least a furtehr 10% downloaded part of it - so upping it to 81million.

REmind me how many albums have had 26million (or indeed 81million) listens in the first month of release.

Say what you want about em, but 26million complete album downloads isnt bad. I havnt downloaded it yet, despite having seen them about a dozen times over the year. Might do it soon!

I've never knowingly put on the "simples" ad but I've seen it loads of times. 26m people haven't gone and searched out the album to listen to.

26m downloads. Thats not to say "26m listens". Ive loads of shit Ive downloaded and never listened to it. Free downloads cause the product to lose value.

If Netflix put up a new Scorcese movie for free and only 5% of downloaded it, it would be considered a massive failure.

Anyway, it'll be very interesting to see how it translates to record sales for them this week. And ticket sales come tour time.

Album sales will probably be lower than their last release - but they would be anyway it was 4 years ago!

Id imagine ticket sales will be the chaotic mess they usually are!

I was wondering why the aggressively pro U2 stance, but now I see. You're a nutbar.

Not that that's meant as an insult, it's good to have something you love, but paying and taking the time to see the same band do essentially the same set that often is definitely a clinical something

I would have listened to it if it had appeared in my library like it seemed to with everyone else. Not quite arsed enough to actually seek it out. That iTunes advert with their (Joey Ramone?) song on is pretty awful, too.

Going to the see same the same band loads is great. I kind of wish I obsessively loved some smaller bands, though, to make doing so a bit more affordable.

Just throw this little nugget out there

Bono says tax laws bring ireland prosperity and capitalism brings people out of poverty.

We don't have any natural resources tho.

Broadly speaking he's correct mate.

Doing something you enjoy once every four or 5 years? A nutbar? Really? Each to their own. Ive seen plenty of bands more than Ive seen U2! I must be a total loser, of just love live music. One of the two!

Im not agressively anything.

You said you'd seen them a dozen times over the year... I now take it you meant over the years?

    • I decided to goto bed early for the Aussie game rather than stay up for Scotland. I don't regret my decision, I also love the complete over reaction during the world cup when a player has 1 good game, that Watford winger is now everyones dream signing. Its also funny when clubs get into the hype and end up overpaying for someone who then does nothing in the prem.

    • I read the Kerrang review and they didn’t seem overly positive. The definition of a 6 out of 10.
    • Interesting the stat guys say 3 points and -3 goal difference is where it gets to 50/50 territory in terms of going to the last 32. If Scotland lose their last 2 at best they are on -1, play like they did yesterday and they could take a heavy loss.   However thinking about it positively get 4 points from the last 2 games and the group is won! Have heard a few saying Scotland should just park the bus next 2 games, but not sure they have the players to do it. From my perspective they could really do with a decent defensive midfielder to add balance, but not sure if they have one in the squad. They also need significantly more from Mctominay who I thought was poor, but understand he has been unwell.
