My take on it is if they are gonna play R&L this year then it will be as headliners.

likewise. just can't see them accepting sub position at all. though they may be smaller than they once were they're definitely still a headliner sized act. if they start accepting sub positions at one or two festivals now then that's pretty much their headline status over when they're booked for future festivals (unless they've already been announced as a sub elsewhere?)

If Linkin Park were in the running because their tour ended around the same time as the announcement but they weren't announced doesn't that mean would should be focusing on other bands to argue about headlining?

They were in the running 'cos they are rumoured for some other fests around the time as the German Eventim site leaked it or something. I dunno but there was an article. It wasn't just the dates being around the time of announcement or it could've been many acts.

The thing is - going back to SOAD again - they headline fests all around Europe I believe and I think SOAD are probably bigger here, but that's based on nothing but instinct. The only thing that sets them apart where R+L is concerned is Linkin Park headlined over ten years ago when they were absolutely massive. If R+L are putting on a perceivably heavier Soni-killer lineup like they did in 2013 then that might be the sort of booking they'd make. However when I suggested it, it was more of a pondering rather than an expectation.

System were big but never massive in both the UK and looking at Euro headliners is always a mish-mash as for example Rock Am Ring will have Limp Bizkit & 30 Secs To Mars headline as well as the likes of System, Metallica & Coldplay. If they had subbed R&L off the reunion I can see your point more but it was the 2nd time round with no new material.

The thing is Linkin Park have always toured arenas in the UK, regularly get no 1/gold album and if anything them not playing the fest in years would probably help them more than harm them. Also keep in mind you were saying a few weeks ago The Strokes would still headline R&L, if Strokes are still headline material then Linkin Park still are.

Yep those are fair points.

Metallica

The Libertines / Kings Of Leon / The Killers

Linkin Park

Seems like a good spread of headliners covering rock/metal, indie & nu metal genre's.

Indie is rock and nu metal is metal and metal is rock.

Linkin Park won't sub

It is like when people were convinced last year that blink could have subbed

No it's not - read it again. That argument was that they couldn't headline again; nobody has said that about Linkin Park.

They subbed at R&L 2002ish then headlined Download a year or two later and split up shortly after.

I know they subbed R&L around then but he said after they'd started headlining festivals. But yeah obviously they didn't play many festivals once they'd reached that level so not really comparable.

Ah yes, the coveted formula of rock/metal, indie, and nu metal that Reading is so known for adhering to

I didn't say it was a formula, just that it covers the bases that the usual R&L attendee would like.

Metallica for older people & those who haven't seen them before.

Libertines for the teenage & fanboys audience.

Linkin Park for the indie/rocker/slightly older than a teenager group.

Just a suggestion.

I've got a feeling that Tom's Angels & Airwaves will show up somewhere on the MainStage. They're releasing a new album in 4 days and they're getting quite a bit of praise.

I hope so! Although I'd rather then play on the NME or an 'indoor' stage.

    • No dramas man, I just like to follow others journeys as well. Get the inspiration, give out inspiration and the outdoors is the clear the head place to do it. I'm heading out for a easy trail run today I think, 10k- 10 mile we'll see how we go. I've got a half marathon in October I'm well unprepared for hahs
    • The Cheap Thrills at Mountford Hall, Liverpool.    They've been around for a while and have built up a large local following. Last night was their biggest yet, at a sold out 2,200 capacity venue.    It was a big old joyous, indie singalong from start to finish, the band clearly having the time of their lives. The debut album is out next month and they seem to be going down well on the festival circuit, maybe their time has finally come.   2 supports, I unfortunately missed Credits but the few songs they have on Spotify sound good, Americana vibes. The other was M60, reportedly Gary Neville's favourite band. If that's true, he's as clueless about music as he is football. To be fair, their sound was poor, maybe with a clearer sound they'd have been better but it was pretty dull.
    • I can see them all merging along with the Tory’s . Restore curently couldn’t muster enough candidates to be a viable option . I lasted 4 mins and couldn’t watch any more . Lowe is just dull along with racist
