Finally got round to listening to the Palma Violets album, I think it's pretty good. Obviously not the saviours of guitar music but not as bad as the NME-hating backlash likes to claim. Just a young band with some decent hooks and influences trying to lay some foundations and find a sound. Shouldn't really expect any more.

I'd argue the majority of young bands have unbalanced first albums that lack direction or discipline while they try to find their groove/sound and discover what it is they want to say/do/be. The difference is most young bands get to do that in obscurity with a couple hundred fans in their hometown being the only people who hear it. I enjoyed bits of the album, other songs weren't for me but these guys have been a band for two years if I'm not mistaken, so I'm quite willing to wait for album 2 to make up my mind about them and I'll probably check them out at Leeds to see if they live up to the hype for myself.

Couldn't agree more. Unfortunately nowadays bands are pushed to have as big an impact as possible as soon as possible in order to feed the industry machine so they don't always have the time to make mistakes or find their sound away from the public eye.
