U2 Friday night headliners!

Not reading 17 pages of it, just noting here that I'm excited about this. Played a U2 album for the first time today, voluntarily, ie not cos someone else wanted to hear it. Sounded fine enough too.

Got to thinking consequently, assuming I'm in my right mind and don't have a sudden & wrong yearning to go off and watch the Hobo Jones and 3 Daft Monkeys Allstars in a small tent somewhere at 10pm that Friday night, who would I seriously allow to trump U2 and anothr once-in-a-lifetime Friday night?

e.g. Elbow on the other stage wouldn't be so bad, I'd live on the 2008 memories. Likewise Spiritualized, they can;t be awesome every time. Orbital would be harder but the memories are there.

Faithless other stage is the biggest problem I can think of so far. :P

I popped on the boards this morning, saw this thread & laughed, thought nothing more of it - the usual U2 rumour. 9 hours & 17 pages later - WOW!! What a result. Did not see this one coming! The unexpected announcements are always the best :P Well done to the Eavii & all at GF, cannot wait for this!!

The good thing about glasto is that every single year it is a Unpredictable line up. Yes you do get some trashy NME bands gracing the other stage but as neil said that is easily avoided. With Reading and Leeds, T, and V, you can usually guess who the headliners are gonna ba wthout second glance, it'll always be The Killers, Kings of leon, Muse and Oasis playing on a rotor with your average NME bands playing on all the other stages. And this is one of the things I love about glasto, it's always full of surprises and you don't know what they will learch on you next!

As for U2, I'm sure they will pull off a blinder next year. Bono said it it something he's always loved to do, so with that in mind, they will hopefully try and make it a special night.

I'll have to say this I guess,

I'm really happy about this! Not sure if I'll go and see them but pulling in U2 is some feat and it will really make the birthday go with a bang. Just need the Stones on Saturday now!

To be fair, it might be my fault rather than Neil's.

I was registering my amusement at him criticising U2 and Metallica today. Him and U2 is gonna be like a repeat of the Springsteen-related Neil vs. the zealots all over again. One band of angry fans with their pitchforks, torches and banners have come back down the hill from efestivals castle, and another one will be rumbling up the hill to take it's place. It's just the 'Boss' banners will be replaced by 'Bono' ones....

I am well aware that U2 are not the "coolest" band in the world (anymore) and I'll never forget the issue of Select magazine (loved Select - why did that go and Q remained?) where they pointed out that it must be weird being Bono because he could phone Princess Di and Bill Clinton live from the stage, sell out stadiums the world over and have more money than the whole of Africa (ironically) but all the time he would have to be aware that, ultimately, U2 were not The Smiths! But my point is this. I just tried to make a "best of" on my itunes and they could play twice and still not play all of their genuinely great songs. I had to include the entire of Achtung Baby because there literally isn't a bad track. This year is gonna rock! All those people determined to slag them off because they're popular (don't pretend it's for any other reason) can sod off and watch the cool young band with no tunes but a nice haircut that'll be headlinging the JP stage and pretend it was the best gig ever. Me? I'll be about level with the sound tower, just to the left, watching one of the greatest live acts the world has ever seen. If you're determined to be "cool" that's your problem.

Tough to be fair, plenty of people don't like U2, not because they are popular, just because they don't like them. There's loads of bands I couldn't care less about that others rave about. So, everybody doesn't HAVE to like them...the rest of the festival certainly won't be empty when they are on, and that I suppose is why Glasto is great...
