Mine's all done but I've been doing it a long time. Are you quite new to it? I've heard it will take till mid Feb for some.

Much experience from eFests folk volunteering as Avalon Crew? Been on my bucket list to give it a go one day, tempted for this year as currently ticketless.

Yes a few in this thread have worked with Avalon.  Largely positive comments but the work can be tiring.

Did Avalon last year and am considering it again as didn't get a regular ticket. The perks are good (campsite just outside gate C, access to crew bars, showers, decent and plentiful meals) and I don't mind bar work at all, but the shifts are a fair old slog and obviously it takes a lot of time out of your weekend (3x8 hour shifts with fairly strict 30 mins break).

 

Was fun being there on Tuesday and then watching everyone else arriving Wed onwards, and also quite eye-opening to see 'the other side' of the festival. But overall, I'd still rather go as a punter and have my time be my own!

Worst thing I’ve heard is if you’re semi decent at the work you get shifted into busier bars as a reward, whilst the useless people get the rest of their shift off, not sure how much that reflects the wider experience or if it’s just my grumpy mate

Definitely worth a go then, 3 shifts will fly by and as far as crowds and punters go, there are much worse around. One other my mates has done a couple working, loved it, completely different feel

Busiest shifts are surely Wednesday and Thursday night so they're probably great if you want to see the main stages Friday to Sunday.

I think staff got moved mid-shift from quiet bars to busier bars. As a worker, I'd rather be on a busy bar; goes much quicker and is more fun.

I never heard of useless folk getting the rest of their shift off.

Used to be shelter that did it, mostly positive feedback. Should at least sign up, they draw places for people that haven't done it before by ballot so you lose nothing by applying. 

 

Last year anecdotally a lot of people who applied by the deadline got off the wait-list. Presumably slightly less chance this year if more returners but definitely worth a go!

I’d definitely rather be busy than stood around doing bugger all, don’t mind bar work either, get some nice brief interactions, only downer would be turning away hammered drunk people but supervisors can deal with them in f they’re difficult.

I got into Avalon from the wait list last year. I thought it was a great experience and would recommend it to anyone. I worked Cockmill bar and there was talk of sending us to another bar on Thursday when it was quiet, but it was decided it wasn't required. We had the reverse on Sunday night where we were swamped and people were pulled from other bars to help us.

Great campsite, the team were nice, friendly and put my nerves at doing this scale of bar work to rest. The shifts went by quickly and I mostly got to see who I wanted to.

 

I'm hoping to do it again this year and had decided I was going to before ticket day.

Hey I’ve been doing it 3 yrs had my deposit and application all filled out by the 7th just a little anxious as the cut off point is the 5th feb I believe. I can imagine they are busy in the office organising everything and I don’t want to keep asking the same question I’ll give it a few more days then email them

Avalon: it was a great way to experience Glastonbury. Easy pass in/out and access to crew bars are two great perks. Everyone was friendly and shifts went relatively quickly. It does require stamina to do shifts and enjoy the festival around them. But good to remember, when tiring, that we were raising money for an excellent cause, in CALM.

This year will be my fourth. Easy work, in the 'heart' of the action (no risk of being palmed off to steward a random traffic gate at the arse end of sticklinch), 5 free meals (I think? I never use mine), showers and staff camping just outside gate C. Staff camp is right behind iicon so is noisy til 6am, but I sleep OK with ear plugs. My normal work pattern in real life is 13 hours so it's a doddle by comparison, and 99% of the punter interactions are lovely. Would recommend, I'm planning to do it again this year.

I think we got 8 meal vouchers last year! Life saver to start shift with decent breakfast inside me

Email from Oxfam this week- anyone requiring reasonable adjustments for shifts etc need to apply to Nimbus first which has upset people who don’t meet Nimbus criteria but still need some RA. I can see it’s going to be helpful for the organisers to arrange shifts for those with specific disabilities and ensure right support but doesn’t take into account those people who may need minor adjustments and whose medical/other needs are manageable outside of the festival environment. Having said that there were a few people on my shifts last year who basically were not able to actually do much work at all on shift so they might as well not have been there.

They’ve not announced yet, but I’m sure the last couple of times it’s been 10am. Are you jumping in for a few festivals?

Indeed I am. I know one of them goes in about 2 mins however....

Oxfam no longer doing Bearded Theory but are doing some new festivals 

you can volunteer direct for BT though
