Don’t love this tbh. Tokenism. Need devolution to the north (and other regions), not some outpost of Westminster. The whole point should be to decentralise, not move the geography of the centre.

I don’t really mind him leaning into his identity, its a bit on the nose often, but it’s also true that he is a madchester loving evertonian lad from culcheth*. And it won’t hurt him in the red wall, at least in the north west.

 

But breadcrumbs from the table and some tokenistic regional representation without real decentralisation isn’t good enough, just hope that this is a placeholder for the latter rather than in lieu of. Only day 4 or whatever.

 

The point being, a number 10 in the north isn’t needed if the north has its own regional assembly with serious political power left alone to make its own decisions. Hopefully that happens in time and ’number 10 in the north’ becomes no more than an embassy of the Westminster govt.

Fingers crossed he does. Problem is the economic mess is a head wrecker to unpick and impossible to please everyone in prioritising policies and balancing £s to fund those.

Well so far he's doing a decent job on cost of living and claiming easy wins and claiming credit for them (all things Starmer didn't do).

 

A few reports of some investment happening, which would be good.

 

Where I think he'll fail on, is I suspect he'll carry on 80% of the human rights mistreatments Starmer has done (as shown by keeping Mahmood, Phillipson, McFadden). 

 

Someone can be a positive for most of the country and still a shitbag who makes lives worse for the vulnerable.

What was wrong with Phillipson I thought she did a decent job as education secretary. McFadden is basically there to get the welfare bill down, I don’t have issue with that in principle, will depend how it is done.

So, overall I think Burnham has had a good start. It has definitely been fast moving and different, there is definitely a sense of Change that we're being told relentlessly about in cutesy promo videos posted on social media  But to think this means we can now look forward to a period of lovely, progressive, stable government seems a bit too optimistic to me, but then I'm a bit of a pessimist so... Because the fiscal situation has not changed, we are still in a bit of a hole. There were going to be tax rises and cuts here and there anyway, but now there will have to be more, a lot more if he's going to do all these wonderful things. And maybe they will do a wealth tax or increase CGT, but plenty of people who know stuff are warning these might actually not raise much money overall, but I guess people like the idea of taxing the rich because a lot of people don't see themselves as rich, but they might still have to find some money from elsewhere and are they really going to keep relying on fiscal drag to do all the work? So maybe there will be a new tax or levy, say its for social care, call it the hope tax or something, but really its just another broad based tax. Will people fall for it? Will Martin Lewis tell them? And maybe they will borrow more and call it war bonds or security bonds or hope bonds and will the markets will fall for it? Will Martin Lewis tell them? So, a lot of risk with all that, huge risk. And there will be stuff that pisses off the left, North Sea oil and Mahmood being a rotter and not telling Trump to f**k off etc and Polanski hasn't quite disappeared yet.

So we'll see. Maybe this devolution thing will be great, not that confident it will be, local government is often sh*t. Might work well in some places, not others. Could be some regional inequality. Maybe we'll have wars between regions like the good old dark ages. He really needs to move away from it all looking like its about NW England anyway, because there are other parts of England apparently, and there's these other things called Scotland and Wales too...and actually all these other countries on this planet we live on, with an escalating war in the middle east which could be about to totally f**k the economy.
