Headliners 2023

I think we can all agree a foo fighters secret set on the park could be dangerous so I propose they invent a new type of set, namely 'a surprise set' and they occur on the other stage or pyramid stage.

Like a secret set they don't say who it is but it affords them the luxury of getting a massive band and it not potentially being dangerous as they are on an adequately big stage.

Maybe this will make it a little less special for those in attendance but it makes it easier to handle the Blur, Foo fighters and U2 crowds they will have this year if they were on the JP/Park

Such a good shout. Means everyone gets the chance to see the set too!

Not sure U2 will play with a replacement drummer but stranger things have happened.

Larry Mullen Jr. says he may not drum with U2 if the band tours in 2023 (nme.com)

more inclined to beleive the Foos will turn up somewhere

they'll need to break-in a new drummer with some shows.

No matter what madness you may read here, take comfort in knowing it's nothing near as bad as socials for Download before and after the announcement

"Metallica wouldn't play 2 nights, that's a waste of a slot"

"BMTH can't headline, not big enough and they're shit"

"<band that headlined recently> should sub/play a lower stage"

"Where's SOAD?" (singer literally does not want to tour and is doing vegas for a payday)

"Where's Maiden?" (band that played 2022)

"Where's Ozzy?" (man that can barely stand up)

Thing is, there's going to be four headliner-sized acts booked (plus legend). There have been for the past few. One act will be booked for a secret set but with the option of stepping in as headliners if anything happens. The festival had a few close calls in the past losing acts last minute and I've convinced after the mess in 2015 they've taken to having an act on site that can step-in. This will generally be an act that they have a good relationship with for obvious reason. Foos fit this (so do Pulp to be fair).

Secondly you have the fact that while the festival may know who they want playing, things might not be all signed sealed and delivered. It's possible GnR have got awkward and they're courting other bands, either legitimately or as a negotiating tactic.

(And I do think Bono doing his solo thing as legend does actually work as a possibility)

Oh I’ve still definitely read far worse on here.

I don’t recall them ever having a close call to the point they literally need a standby on site.

They’ve had incidents like any festival has most years, but always in plenty of time to sort an adequate replacement.

no because they announce who the opening act is, their name is on the schedule.

It's not consistent and they can do what they want. For a couple of years the Friday Other opener was a secret set. Libertines played as a TBA in 2015. There's nothing to stop them making the Pyramid opener a secret set - it's quite a cool idea actually as the festival has generally lacked that sort of defined opening moment with how people arrive days early and there's stuff going on before the festival "proper" kicks off on Friday morning.

Yes, they once played with a replacement bassist because Adam was too hungover to perform.

2015

What Dave Grohl breaking his leg?

Pretty sure that didn’t happen at the festival and didn’t necessitate a standby headliner act to be at the festival.

It was resolved by a simple bump up for an act that had already been booked months or years previously.

I was there, it went down well and compared to these days there were certainly folks on site who didn't know - I had a couple of friends on site who were jealous they missed it, which made it better obviously.

A lot of people were hoping for something like that last year as a welcome back after two cancelled festivals.

In the end they went with Ziggy Marley, so adjust your expectations accordingly.

    • Really well done, Primavera. Maybe the biggest name on the lineup as a surprise. (Ecpecially if Robert joins this)
    • There's one way it can get bigger- if Robert Smith joins her on stage
