I actually don’t think meeting in a restaurant and visiting someones house is the same. I think you’re much more likely to keep distance i.e sit across the table for instance, than if you were lounging in someone’s house. I think the familiarity of someone’s house means you let your guard down. But everyone seems to be saying it’s absurd that people can meet in a pub but not their house - am I the only one to disagree?

I agree. I don’t usually see much sense in what the Government does but I totally see the logic in that.

The % positive tests in the UK are miles below the level WHO recommends. If you look at places where the virus is out of control (e.g. certain US states), even with lots of testing, about 15% are coming back positive some days...WHO says 5% positive is when widespread lockdown should be considered...in the UK at the moment, it’s about 0.5%. The areas they are imposing restrictions in have higher % positive rates (nothing like the US though) hence those are the ones targeted. We had 85 cases yesterday. Far and away the most cases we have had in months (it’s been between 5 and 20 most days for weeks). Everyone panicked...then looked at the clusters. Two large ones made most of the difference...A meat packing plant and a direct provision centre. Both extremely high risk, and basically to be expected unless we all stay home all the time...but contacts have been identified, tested and isolated, So, it’s not panic stations yet, sustained community spread isn’t common (either here or in the UK). These spikes will happen, we just need to keep a lid on them when they do (and continue to practice risk mitigation of our own when we are out and about).

The issue is though, once you reach that 5% figure, the virus is out of control and cases are going to keep rising exponentially, making national lockdown the only option.

National cases need to be kept under max 1000 a day for the foreseeable future. Really, we should be looking at only 200-500 positive tests a day(like germany has had for the last 2.5 months, although it’s increased slightly above that now). If it gets any higher than that, contact tracing becomes impossible and the virus starts to run out of control, and you’re then looking at national measures as your only real solution to the issue.

We all know another national lockdown isn’t really an option, but they can always impose these new restrictions of no meeting other households on the whole country if they need to, while keeping businesses open to save the economy. They can also introduce curfews to prevent people getting too drunk and less likely to observe social distancing and they can also get stricter on face masks. These are all powers we have should it start to run out of control again.

Right now, it’s not out of control, but with borders open it makes it a lot easier to spiral out of control, which is why new guidance needs to be issued now for hotspot areas. The issue is, how many people will stick to this new guidance? Maybe it can be enforced in a pub/ restaurant setting, but no way are the police going round knocking on everyone’s doors checking they don’t have people over.

I was hit by a car on Dick Lane

They do drive like dicks on Dick Lane. They’re a little bit more sensible on Fanny Street.

Before anyone questions it these are actually real road names in Bradford.

I’m hoping we can see our families at Christmas but that’s about it.

Im hoping this is all over and done with by May-June 2021. But I really don’t know at this point.

I’m trying to sort a trip to the states in May and obviously Glastonbury in June but I feel like even that is being ambitious. I have family in Florida I haven’t seen for over a year as it is!

Maybe they'll announce new restrictions on different households meeting inside on Christmas eve, same as they have done for Eid. Or maybe they won't as doesn't poll so well.

Don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this yet but casinos, bowling alleys and live music and theatre with socially distanced audiences will no longer be able to start from tomorrow. Expected to be announced in the press conference.

Meanwhile both Belgium and Poland have seen over 600 infections again today, not long until Belgium receives a mandatory quarantine from us. I expect this to be announced within the next few days as well.

There won’t be any restrictions that affect our Tory overlords personally. Just shows that they only care about themselves.

Should be announced today considering Spain's numbers when we announced that!

Yes, Belgium is +671 today, and has 1/6 of our population.

So would equate to a rise of 4026 cases in the UK.

I think it’s a matter of when, not if, for a quarantine on Belgium being introduced. Hopefully sooner rather than later, before it’s too late.

The prime minister says the rules on face coverings will be extended "to other indoor settings where you're likely to come into contact with people you do not normally meet such as museums, galleries, cinemas and places of worship."

"We now recommend face coverings are worn in these settings and this will become enforceable in law from the 8 August," he says.

Seems a sensible step to take.
