When will this shit end?

Hancock said that lockdown will be lifted by reference to the death rate, hospitalisation rate, new variant prevalence and progress of the vaccine roll-out. There was no mention of case rates. Perhaps the government deliberately left that out as the expectation may be with the vaccine that even if cases are high (or higher than we'd like), we'd be able to lift lockdown on the assumption that the most vulnerable have been protected so those infected are not going to require hospitalisation or die?

Tbh it makes sense to go by more than just case rates. We can't loosen lockdown whilst hospitals are up against it, it wouldn't be morally right in my opinion.

as the lockdown lifts and we resume some normality the infections will naturally rise I would guess ... although hopefully mitigated by the fact we might be in Summer and socialising outside more

Yeah definitely. It is just going back to a discussion I think was had on here a couple of weeks ago regarding the long-term approach if the vaccines are not sterilising and do not impact transmission rates (which for what it's worth appears not to be the case), i.e. can we just accept young/non-vulnerable people getting infected in the knowledge that they are very unlikely to die?

This is where we need global warming to kick in...

I could see them allowing group meetups outside March/April time because of there being far less transmission out there, this would be a huge help to so many people so hopefully we don't have to wait much longer as spring is just round the corner

Also my granddad (81) had his vaccine today and my partner's dad (79) has his booked for tomorrow! Relief on both counts

Both my parents in their 80's got their first jab today, no issues thankfully 🙂

Case rates won't really matter in future as if everyone is protected by the vaccine but still catching it we might not even know.

yeah, and that will be the interesting bit, if cases rise but hospitalisations/deaths don't rise...and then what happens with infection rate as more and more people get vaccinated...it's like we're living in a big petri dish.
