My thoughts are that, even if it stops a few people doing it, the new messaging should simply be "nobody should spend Christmas Day alone" (which support bubbles means would be allowed anyway but not everyone realises that it turns out). From there yes it's down to personal responsibility but it at least gives some kind of indication that it's a serious situation

I think this variant thing is just a fear/distraction technique. Easy for them to blame a variant for not putting the right measures in place.

and he has just told me that christmas bubbles are to be cancelled in London, and there will be a nationwide plea to not visit london and all commuting to stop. And then a big new year lockdown.

I would normally think that was conspiracy theory type stuff, but I've got to agree. The timing does feel super convenient. Not saying there isn't a new strain, but there have been many, haven't there?

Yeah my point isn't that I think it's a lie, but maybe it's being... leaned on a bit. Thought it was weird that Matt Hancock seemed to be the first person to say anything about it too to be honest.

Obviously it’s just guesswork, but if there is a new strain that spreads more easily, there is also a chance it’s less dangerous as well.

Hopefully if it is genuine, they’ll know enough to tell us later.
