With Liam Gallagher confirmed for Reading, & Bon Iver confirmed for august festivals, we only have two potential headliners (and is Liam a headliner?).

I have the idea that it is again a difficult year.

Doubt Liam could sell as a solo-head. In 2018 he opened to Dua Lipa and, same as his brother in 2016, he has always been publicized as a sub-headliner. The free promotion without real hit material would be awful (just like it was the promotion of Major Lazer and Kasabian to headliners in 2017 after subbing in 2015, and I guess we all remember how that year was received).

Usually the 2-3 weak headliners Sziget had in these years were fresh material, one hit wonders if you will, so I heavily doubt Liam Gallagher can be an Headliner in Sziget's mind.

On the other hand, I am pretty positive on Bon Iver being secured. Also, I agree that this looks like another difficult year for Sziget and that they are most likely waiting for an embargo / a big bargain to be over in January.

In the last 5 years, except for 2016 and 2018, it has been 3 difficult years for the target of festivals Sziget wants to strike: big headliners usually don't like to tour in August, that seems to be a fact, and Sziget eventually ends up by paying a shitload of money in exclusives, so why just don't move the festival to late July or late August than? Afraid of the competition?

Sziget suffers because of the lack of competition in my view. For example Glastonbury, Roskilde and werchter are around the same time. So they can pick up bands from the other festival quite easily.

Tame Impala in the U.S until 7 August. Chance of a trip across the pond to close Sziget? Or do we think European festival season for Tame Impala might be during mid-June to mid-July?

I honestly hope he will come to Sziget, I bought my ticket only because I thought he's gonna be there :(

Seriously? If you see this list, it seems that the focus will be on Roskilde, RW... It is always possible off course.

Bet my ass that they will focus on the RW-NOS-MC-Roskilde period rather than August, and they will take abreak after the second leg of US tour. I'd say they are over the game right now...

Never ever ever buy a ticket based on what you hope will be there, unless you have reasonable intel from an insider...

It's unlikely. They played August festivals this year (Pukkelpop, Lowlands, Oya, Flow) and I don't think they would come to Europe only to play at Sziget.

New names for Balaton Sound are here: Martin Gsrrix, Don Diablo, Matoma, Loco Dice, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Jonas Blue, Deborah De Luca, Meduza, Kygo, Salvatore Ganacci, Modstep, Lario Alicante, Robin Schulz, Danny Tenaglia, Vini Vici, Sigala, Jax Jones, ZHU, Balastoyz, Loud Luxury.

So anything from the above won't be at Sziget, and now i can see Arim Van Buuren in Sziget's line up ?

I have no knowledge of EDM. Is Van Buuren not good? I quite enjoyed Garrix last year despite knowing little of what was being played. The show was fun.

No chance of Chemical Brothers rather than a DJ or is a DJ an essential headliner?

It seems to be essential, given the last years booking. You have to give the younger audience some trash to chew on, if that makes sense...

AVB remains my bet for the forth-coming year, which is not properly interesting. I mean, it would have been 10 years ago with the Trance era, now it is just plain boring for me

They also did Glastonbury though which is early summer. Not really much to go off in my opinion.

Armin Van Buuren IS very good. One of the best in this category actually, so we should be glad if he's really comin' ;)

Do people choose Sziget for the lineup? I would imagine it's for the Sziget experience more than anything. Day tickets yeah, but not the 5/7 day tickets.

Been for 6 years and never done it cause of the line up. However I did feel let down in 2017, headliner wise it was pretty bad that year, so i guess it does still influence my enjoyment somehow..

No, but I mean, it is not like the Sziget experience is the same like it was 5 years ago, the management itself made some changes that altered the feeling (from World Stage removal to barricades thrown randomly in the bigger stages, lineup choices themselves, etc.). Things got a little bit washed out (still remaining wild af, don't get me wrong) and the management trying to impose a supremacy in the lineup building against the other competitors (PKP and R&L to begin with), makes one asks himself what they are actually after.

TLDR: Sziget is actually after a lineup-focused festival, and the whole Sziget Experience is turning year after year into a marketing gimmick.

There is a batch of names for FM4 Frequency Festival (Austria, 20-22.08) tomorrow morning, maybe we'll find out about more touring headliners.

Looks like they postponed the announcement, but they promised to come back with a "bombastic video". Interesting!

I see Sziget was announced as a nominee in the Best Major Festival and Best Line Up categories at the European Festival Awards yesterday.

Results are announced on 15 January.

Wonder if they're hoping for a result there before making their first announcement?

Would not take much notice of awards like that myself.

    • https://x.com/amirtibon/status/2083054470871535853   Some thoughts on the Gaza agreement announced overnight, which despite my reservations and concerns, I hope will be implemented. 1. Donald Trump is trying to collect "wins" and "achievements" ahead of the midterm elections. His party is entering that election at a disadvantage, but because Democrats may choose weak and unpopular candidates in specific states, much like Republicans did in 2022, there's a reason for Trump to at least try achieving a surprising result like the one Biden secured four years ago.   2. The will to provide Trump such a "win" was an important motivation for all sides involved in this agreement: Hamas, Netanyahu, Qatar, Egypt, UAE and Turkey. All of them hope, each for their own reasons, that the transactional president will remember their role in the agreement and the positive media coverage it has generated and will continue to generate. You can like it or not, but that's the nature of diplomacy, especially in the Middle East, under Trump.   3. Netanyahu and his band of liars in the Israeli media (and the last few suckers in the American media still buying his spin) are already trying to oversell the agreement and present it in terms that contradict the Board of Peace statements and briefings. Of course, the October 7 Prime Minister can't just say the truth on this one, which goes something like: "I'm trying to stay on good terms with Trump ahead of an election here in Israel that will determine my personal fate and whether or not I go to jail in 2027."   4. For Hamas, the agreement is a way to buy time and survive, which is basically the organization's overarching goal since October 7. They lost most of their leadership and thousands of their fighters; they will also, I believe, give up some of their weapons to the new Gaza-based Palestinian government, which is a good thing. But at the bottom of all their decisions is a simple calculation: being able to say, "we committed the most deadly and humiliating attack against Israel since the start of the conflict, and survived as a movement and an organization to tell about it."   5. Hamas was able to say that yesterday, before the agreement was signed, and it can also say that today, after the conclusion of the negotiations. So in that regard, the agreement is preferable to the murky post-war reality that preceded it, in which Hamas was recruiting again thousands of young fighters, holding on to all its weapons, and controlling 99% of Gaza's population, making money off people buying fuel and cigarettes. Changing even a part of that terrible reality, by collecting some of the weapons and allowing progress on reconstruction under a non-Hamas government, is better. It means coming to terms with the fact that Israel under this government failed to dismantle Hamas and allowed its survival even before this agreement was signed.   6. Do I think the agreement will be fully implemented over the next 300 days, as I understand the timeline? I'm highly skeptical. But I'm also asking: what are the alternatives? Netanyahu, in his quest for political survival at all costs, ignored David Ben-Gurion's national security strategy of seeking short and decisive wars, which was based on Israel's unique internal and external challenges that make it dangerous for this country to have long wars of attrition. The result is an Israel that is hated, isolated and denounced around the world like never before, and is totally reliant on the support of one man (TRUMP) to avoid crushing international sanctions. Going to war in Gaza once again based on the same promise of "finishing Hamas," which this government failed to achieve after three long years, would have been suicidal unless Trump promised his full backing. And Trump, for good reasons, can't give such a commitment after his bitter experience with Netanyahu in Iran and Lebanon.   7. For me and my family, these are all very personal, not only political, questions. My six-year-old daughter will start school on the Gaza border in exactly one month, as we rebuild our life in the same home where Hamas tried to murder us on October 7. We've learned over the years to be highly skeptical of premature victory announcements and diplomatic celebrations. When these things collapse under the cynical realities of the conflict, most of those announcing them are not around to face the consequences. Still, I don't see a better alternative to the 20-Point Plan that Trump presented last year, at least not with Israel's current position of isolation and exhaustion under this government. So I have some hope that the agreement will succeed, even partially, and deliver a period of quiet. For us on the border, that would be significant after three years of war and trauma. And maybe in the long run, with different Israeli and Palestinian leadership, this will become a first step in a broader positive change for the region.
    • Until they're through the first round of votes there's no point believing any reports about who'll win.
    • David Byrne’s obviously got a few hits to play, but he’s not cheesy enough for the Legend Slot. Other headliner perhaps?
    • Too good for the legends slot
