Init old son

They could use Jurassic Park technology to clone the band which would be brilliant until the frog DNA in Nicky Wire changes gender, causing him to burst through the electrified fencing and run amok through the site, eating punters along the way. Michael Eavis could then motor through the site in his Land Rover with a tranquiliser gun attempting to end the horrific rampage of Mr. Nicholas Wire before he gets the license revoked.

Would still be better than The 1975, mind you.

Actually the Crows Nest is a fair shout, as is the Rabbit Hole (another one that regularly puts on secret sets). I saw the Blockheads in there and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It's that I just can't see how they could possibly put on another big act when there have been huge crowds for nothing more than a rumour. They tried closing off the field for both Pulp and Radiohead head, and whilst it must have deterred some plenty more just ignored the security and walked in from the top of the field. Now Emily has raised the specter of a secret set I can't see that anything big will happen up there. Another secret set by the Egg in the Rabbi Hole perhaps?

If this isn't a thing it really should be!!

The Manics better than Pulp

If I tolerate that, then my children will be next.

Ive seen maiden a few times, they were wicked, it was exactly as I expected and wanted from them, a big overblown stage show with 80s metal tunage, eddie and the rest of it all.......what do you go to a maiden show expecting? im a fan and even ill admit they live in their own little timewarp.....but seeing as they still sell out arenas the world over im pretty sure they and their fans are fine with that!

off to see them in cardiff next month, first time in a few years. cant wait....if your willing to forget your seriousness and lose yourself in a bit of cheesy 80s arena metal youll have a blast. If your not youll stand in the corner tutting about how `butlins it is` lol

When you turn up expecting the hits and the first words are "we are going to play the new album in full" collective groan from all fans, new and old

1 was at I believe V, maybe 2006 ? The other was the park in Glasto in 2010 again I think.

Last time I attended v. Started at fat boy slim moved onto kasabian and finished with Radiohead. 3 of the worst headline sets I've had the misfortune of seeing

Hmm, can't get that excited about it.  I only went to the Radiohead secret set last time and ended up miles up the hill above a mudslide listening to songs from an album that hadn't come out yet with crap sound. Gave up and heard Creep or Karma Police just as I reached the Old Railway Line.

Don't think you did hear those. Think it was basically all KoL and In Rainbows until they finished with Street Spirit.

Secret sets are just pointless. There seems to be a consensus that they've been bad in the past, with very few people finding a good one. Pulp stands out, but that's about it as I've seen on the boards here.

If they're really your favourite band and you missed them or you caught them and the band decided to be a little experimental, ie playing music off their B-sides or lesser/new albums, you're basically going to despise them.

They're a massive waste of time.

The only thing that makes them pointless these days is that due everybody having the internet so readily available across the festival they don't stay secret for very long. The actual sets themselves are often great and it's ace to see bands play stages much too small for their current stature, and the likes of Thom Yorke & Jonny Greenwood are just magical because it was essentially a once in a lifetime thing that came out of absolutely nowhere. I think there's far more cases of them being a success (or at least okay) rather than disappointment.

Why do people think The XX will be a secret park set? Isn't that the most underwhelming thing ever? "Here is s band that are playing on the main stage; now watch them again". If you're a fan then you've just seen them, no?

Neil's had info placing them there. I actually think it's more likely to be a Jamie solo set, but that's just my speculating

I'm inclined to agree with this. At a festival with more secrets and surprises around every other corner than one could possibly see in a weekend anyway, people do get awfully concerned about the possibility of seeing a band in a setting probably larger and less intimate than that at which they would appear on a normal tour.

    • As first timers last year the whole set-up blew our mind with the fire on the Sunday, it seemed you could get too close and I didn’t like dodging falling embers!
    • I'd be absolutely amazed if they went without a female headliner.

    • Kinda sounds like we’re heading towards Fender, Fontaines & Harry however I can’t see them not getting a female headliner so think it’ll be Fender or Fontaines and another. They’ll obviously try for Madonna but they’ve also tried before, really depends on whether she’s bothered about it.
