I quite like Christmas. I'm not religious, but it was a time of celebration for millennia before the church appropriated it. It's when the days start getting longer, and when you can say you're closer to next glasto than the last one! I also enjoy watching the excitement of the kids in our family.

It's simply a festival of excess these days....endless TV advertisements displaying tables groaning with enough food to feed a small country and ad's that make you feel guilty if you don't buy your Gran a 4K TV at 'only' £699 - the 'perfect gift' etc.

Vile.

Mind you I do like a new pair of socks on the 25th....

Another Christmas hater here.  It all seems about trying to offend as few people as possible.  Who should 94 year old mother in law go to for Christmas this year  - her daughter or son?

And with today's oft-divorced and re-married complex families do your kids stay with their mum (your ex) or you.  And if they are with your ex, how is your current missus going to cope with meeting up with her or are you going to skip seeing the kids on Christmas Day?

My biggest hate is cheap plastic tat presents made in China.  I'd rather an EFests mug (except I've already got one) than some silly game that falls apart in five minutes.

The one thing we have agreed that works well within our fairly large extended family for the adults is a Secret Santa system.  Everyone's name goes into a hat and then each person draws a name.  They have to buy a present for that person - maximum spend is usually between £10 and £15.  It is wrapped and goes, anonymously, into a big box.

On Christmas Day each adult gets their one Secret Santa gift, not knowing who it's from or who to thank (or blame if it's cheap plastic tat made in China).  It keeps costs down and actually encourages a bit of initiative.

All this I celebrate wearing my Bah Humbug hat.

It was the first lesson for one of my courses today and we were playing a 'get to know the teacher' game and one of the things they had to guess was what Glastonbury was and why it's special to the teacher.

90% hadn't heard of it, but one girl asked if I liked to go there over Christmas and I had to say...

"I wiiiiiiiiiissssshhhhhh I could"

Second fest during Winter? I'd be game. Better Chrimbo than normal.

Christmas is all about the kids. It's the best day for most of us until we grow up. Then we have kids and it becomes all about debt.

I do love listening to a some of the tunes though. My kids get brainwashed with the old classics like The Pogues, Lennon, Crosby etc. Frosty the Snowman & co can fk right off! (unless my missus is in the car, then it's Rudolph, Jingle bells, Deck the halls etc etc)

I really like Christmas and the cold. I just like all the festivities and drinking that happen in the lead up. Can't stand how early it starts though, seeing decorations and hearing Christmas music everywhere in November is so irritating.

Winter and Christmas, whats not to like. Lots of eating and drinking. I don't have a telly so don't see all the adverts. Mince Pies good, Baileys good, Casseroles good, Turkey meh, sitting by the fire drinking a nice warming hot chocolate with whiskey. Delightful. 

And I say all that as someone who hates being cold. Oh and dont get me started on snow. Bloody love the stuff.

This.  I stopped celebrating xmas about a decade ago, not a card, dec or present in sight, the last few years I've worked over the whole period and am planning the same this year.

Winterval - an idea thought up by a a member of Birmingham City Council in October 2008. I still feel the shame to this day. In fact these councillors and heads of department are slowly starting to get on my tits. I may have to put myself up for election as a councillor. First I'll become a councillor for the Transport Department. I can see it now - I'll be able to tell people where to put and not put bollards. Plus I'll be able to go home from Council meetings knowing that my bus fare can be re-claimed on expenses. Oh my God, I'm already getting giddy with the power. I'm not sure what my next action will be but suspect it will be something to do with lollypop ladies.

Do you work for a council ie. are there millions of lights and also working at height issues? I'd probably be able to get you a cheaper quote than that but suspect you have to draw off a list of approved contractors?
