Clutching a glass of wine, Richie told the BBC backstage, "What the hell was that...? That was as good as it gets. Even after all the years of me performing, when a crowd takes over like that and shows that much love and they know every song (I love it). And then the dolls! And then my face... When I saw my face in every imaginable form! It was the perfect show, I can't tell you any more. I'm speechless, and for me to be speechless is very hard to do... "I've been to a lot of shows (and) that was organized chaos at its best. Karaoke at its finest... Today, I was in amazement. That was the best. (It was) outrageous. Absolutely outrageous.

How great was this?

Whats the deal with the security? Did they just decide to do that themselves?

We left to go to Future Islands before so this so just saw it yesterday on iPlayer... this had to be pre-organised!

It's too well done to be off the cuff, but it looked great and was in keeping with the atmosphere of the set, which was very much a two-way thing between Lionel himself and the audience.

Whatever about the man's music, some of which is great and some of which is fairly forgettable, he is a proper performer and while he milked it a bit at times, when you have that size of crowd in front of you, you have every right to do so.

It'll be remembered for a long time I suspect

Thank fuck somebody's said this. I wasn't planning on seeing him but ended up seeing the first half. I left my mates there in the end. Dull as fuck.

First half wasn't that great Ill give you that. But if you left early you missed Say You, Say Me, Dancing on the Ceiling, Hello, All Night Long and We Are the World.

Completely unexpectedly, he was one of my highlights. I wasn't even going to bother at all. Cracking band, especially the rhythm section, his voice was good, and no miming (!). Cheese of the highest order in places, but his dancier stuff went down great (largely down to the band), and all in all, put a large smile on my face.

All Night Long hasn't left my ears since Sunday.... "yeah, jumbo jumbo"

I wish he hadn't finished with We Are The World though

To be fair you're nearly always guaranteed a top notch band with these big American acts. Even the really awful shit ones. Its just a given.

Yeah I think that was basically what I missed. He was so boring up to that point that I doubt those songs would have changed my mind.

He's obviously not a Commodors ( spelling ) fan then :P

Bored me senseless. Granny music

Honestly one of the stupidest things I've ever read on the Internet. If you left after the first few tunes, you're a gimp. If you were there through its entirety, you don't like music. It's as simple as that. I'm not a Lionel Richie fan by the way. It was just technically phenomenal. In every aspect you could think of.

I agree agree with your every word, especially the last line. A turd of an ending.

It was good but the crowd were motionless and almost silent where I was (and I was relatively close to the front)

Maybe you're right. I'd just been watching that bit from Kanye when he did Bohemian Rhapsody and the crowd seemed to really get into it. They just seem to have a lot of singalong songs. But I wasn't there at Lionel, perhaps Queen wouldn't top him.

What was it like when he did that song? I got the impression on the telly that the song went down really well, if not the performance.

Actually I thought exactly the same when fast forwarding through kanye's set. that, we will rock you, we are the champions, don't stop me now, radio gaga and many many others I'll have forgotten about....I don't even like queen that much but imagine them in that slot...it'd be up there with Lionel for sure. Never a headliner without the original singer but as the novelty act on the Sunday it would be an absolute moment Edited by efcfanwirral

    • Same here, when the lineup dropped it looked very strong but this year I’m considering more whether I buy tickets for enjoyment or fomo.   Speaking of that dilemma, I caved and bought a Turnstile Piece Hall ticket so I’ll see you there 😂
