Isn't that the beauty of glastonbury - wandering round this other world with the most varied lineup of any festival - and sometimes some massive acts are there too?

I think more recently, festivals have proven that no one is safe from suddenly having a poor ticket sales year. I'd wager that since 2008 Glastonbury has felt forced to be innovative and book a more varied bill, since it's so heavily reliant on the festival selling out.

I don't think the festival can survive on booking just bands and recycling past favourites.

Partly true, the only innovation about it is that she's a female & there haven't been many female solo headliners.

your forgetting the giant ego on people like madge.......having to resort to a greatest hits set would mean her admitting to herself her new stuff was rubbish......not going to happen.

Being a fan of a particular artist does not mean that is all they listen to. I make no apologies for liking her stuff but I am certainly not as die hard as some.

With regard marketing - without that surely you wouldn't have heard the bands you have come to like through gigs or spotify etc. - just different levels. I wonder how many bands think I really hope we aren't commercially successful? - because why would they be bothered about being signed?

The point I was making is that I regularly see people on the internet thinking that literally any opinion, whether it's something horrible like hate speech, or something inconsequential like their music taste, counts as them expressing their freedom of speech. It doesn't. Nobody is actively suppressing your dislike of Madonna. Get a grip.

Absolutely. They're laughable. The argument that the festival should be innovative by booking someone that the luddite campaign for real rock purists approve of is - it's fair to say - a bit flawed from the get go.

Except she does write her own stuff & can play multiple instruments. She worked her way up in the New York club scene from a backing dancer, to a drummer in a post punk band (The Breakfast club) to a solo performer (she even supported the Smiths on a US date in the early 80's). She sacked the producer of her first studio album because she wasn't happy with the direction of it, that hardly screams manufactured pop artist to me.

I agree with Space Monkey ( page back), if only I could quote but this damn PC at work won't allow me to for some reason! Yes she would be another controversial booking to some, and I for one would only go along if there was nothing else I'd rather see but that's just it ,we can, if we want to, I wouldn't slag off those who would want her to perform but I wouldn't say that she is not " big " enough to warrant it despite any absence from the " charts" in recent years. The fact is like it or not she has a " name" in the industry that can be put up in headlines to pander to the populas as a big act, and also slay the Female headliner thing as well, reckon it would be a perfect fit for the Eavis at this point in the festivals future opening it up for other Female acts to headline that stage.

I'm sure there are, however in nine visits I've never seen one waving placards, distributing flyers or loudly espousing dubious political ideas so it really doesn't bother me.

Be ace if she was announced just for the reaction by some on these boards.

Her best work is some damn good music. Like A Prayer is an ace album that I still play a fair bit. The first greatest hits album is one of the best out there.

She's a right mardyarsed bugger though.
