I find myself completly aggreeing with you russy....and that feels dirty haha the idol worship on these boards for the woman is baffling. shes a legend in her genre....but that genre is utter shite....if it makes me sound like a music snob so be it.

Laughable.

personally would have no interest in seeing her and don't think she'd appeal to most festival goers, though I could be wrong,

Laughable.

I also agree with Russy if you want someone else to laugh at.

She doesn't appeal to me and I don't see a music festival as a place for pop acts. Never mind pop acts that haven't had a hit this decade

You are wrong. Very wrong.

Look at Glastonburys line ups through the years. Most musical genres are represented and Pop massively so.

Not a fan of her, fine. Projecting that thinking onto the hundreds of thousands of folk going to music festivals is idiotic.

Shes an icon FFS.

Revisionism Russy? What utter horseshit from you. If there's no place for Madonna to headline Glastonbury the festival should knock it on the head, or maybe you should.

As stated earlier - shes Madonna.

her "hits" are rubbish. I'm looking at her greatest hits album right now!

material girl

crazy for you

lucky star

holiday

cherish

the list goes on. She didnt even write half of them. Not even a credit!

The thought of madonna headlining glastonbury would have made people roar with laughter a decade or so ago. But now she is going to be ranked alongside the greastest ever glastonbury gigs apparently.

THAT'S what is laughable.

Someone needs to lay out why bubblegum pop music is inherently inferior. Some of the greatest music of all time is frothy and fun.

My personal opinion is 99.9% of pop acts do it for the money and don't really care about the music they produce. I see them as the whores of the music world.

Obviously to be really popular it has to be as simple and non offensive as possible. Basically pop is the lowest common denominator of music.

It is also piped at us constantly through the radio and even when your at the bloody super market. I like to think music festivals as a safe haven where the music is in the most part by people who care about it being played to people who've searched out for music they connect to, rather than whats shoved down their throats by the industry.

It always makes me sad when I see a pop act on a festival line up.

I observe that Madonna is older than she was twenty years back and that most of the music that she's best known for was released some time ago now. Furthermore, this music is unappealing to me due to its accessible and chart friendly nature leading it to attain a level of popularity denied to weightier and more obtuse music that I, as a serious adult, prefer.

I dont mind it being lower down the bill. Afterall, the line up needs to cater to everyone's tastes. Even the cloth-eared whoppers who lap up frothy pop shite.

But headlining? No thank you.

Thats horse and you know it.

Sure 10 years ago we were told Kylie was going to be a headliner.............

If you honestly believe that, then you're in total denial.

A decade ago? The reaction would be exactly the same. Hell, there was no significant backlash when Kylie was announced and that would be a more offensive booking.

Even 20 years ago the reaction would have been mostly positive.

30 years ago, I don't know but I'll give you that one.

10 years ago Kylie was supposed to headline and it wasn't an issue.

Coldplay headlined that year. Pyramid was full of people like Keane, Kaiser Chiefs, Killers and James Blunt. Madge would go down a storm. Packed field.

Id be elsewhere mind you. No interest in watching her mime through her set for 2 hours.

15 years ago then...

2000 - Travis

2002 - Rod Stewart

And I'll say it again. Why wasn't there this sort of anti Madge sentiment for Beyonce. Whats the difference? Beyonce has taken the "worst side of the music industry" to entirely new levels. She released a few perfumes that year and was all over UK TV, including her set live on the Beeb.

A whole squad of marketing types deciding on the UK business plan for 2011 based around her Glasto appearance.

Someone needs to lay out why bubblegum pop music is inherently inferior. Some of the greatest music of all time is frothy and fun.

Indeed. But its a lot more difficult to really love and to become emotionally attached to for a lot of people.

you're right about 10 years, but 15-20, no chance.

These acts like madonna, michael jackson, bros.... they just were so far from playing the festival they werent even discussed even in passing.

I may be wrong. Neither of us will really know unless she plays.

Depends what you class as pop, but I don't see pop massively represented in previous line ups. Other than Beyonce headlining in 2011 I can't remember a pop act having a really prominent spot. I know Lilly Allen and the Script have played but they weren't exactly high up the line up.

If she plays something like this then it's a winner:

Living For Love

Hung Up

Into The Groove

Devil Pray

Frozen

Don't Tell Me

Ghosttown

Open Your Heart

La Isla Bonita

Express Yourself

Vogue

Joan of Arc

Take A Bow

Like A Virgin

Lucky Star/Borderline/Holiday

Erotica

Ray of Light

Celebration

-

The Power of Good-Bye

You won't agree with this obviously, but in my opinion the Festival has changed for the better now that people like Madonna and, if he were around, Michael Jackson, would be considered. The kind of Festival you appear to want seems too stubbornly rooted in times gone by, served with a dollop of nostalgia and a side-serving of musical bigotry. If you had your way, the whole shebang would come to a juddering halt within 3-5 years.

In terms of 20 years ago - most of the reason why Madonna and Jackson weren't discussed is because the festival wasn't capable of getting them. My point was that Madonna would have been well received if she'd played then - and she definitely would. Probably far more so than if she plays in 2015.

Are we only looking at headliners to validate the existence of a genre at the fest?

Yes Beyonce was there

Kylie was announced but didnt make it

The likes of Level 42, Shakespeares Sister and the Communards are as pop as you get in my mind..............
