I dunno. I'm not sure that the emotional attachment that someone who bought Ray of Light at 14 has to it is any different to that of someone who bought, I dunno, a copy of Velvet Underground & Nico at the same age. Why should it be?

It shouldn't. I was more thinking along the lines of how the song itself penetrates. Long term. We all have various emotional attachments to songs and albums for various reasons. "Oh this song reminds me of....." etc.

I was really speaking on a purist level I suppose, a lot of times the most arresting work is work thats had the least filter between the musicians brains/voice and our ears.

Its not a "must write their own songs thing". Some of the most emotional music - Sinatra etc was written by others. Dylans new album digs deep similarly. I guess a lot of people, me included to a certain degree, want their music to be clear of any non related side show bullshit.

In no way can being a fan of such a well publicised and quite cynical artist qualify anyone walking the earth as having an open attitude to music. We are all just consumers to these people.

Sometimes that's best, but probably for every time there's another example of great music as a polished commercial product that's passed through any number of collaborative processes and tinkering to be been machine tooled for optimum saleability. Thinking about things like Good Vibrations or River Deep, Mountain High.

Who else is there?

There are only so many groups of four/five white guys with guitars big enough to do it, and most of them are either unavailable or have done it recently. I'm not a huge fan of Madonna, but she is a global superstar and a worthy headliner. I can see bands every week. I go to Glastonbury to see things I might not pay to see otherwise and for me this is one of them.

EDIT: Read your ticket, it's "Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Perfoming Arts". It doesn't even mention music, yet alone genres.

Absolutely. To pick a few classics - late era Beatles and a lot of Springsteens work was polished and border line over considered.

It makes no sense to be in the music business if you don't want people to listen to your stuff and see you live. Even Pink Floyd who were considered quite inaccessible and underground are on record stating that their main goal was to become rich and famous. And it all started to go tits up once that happened.
