LIONEL RICHIE

Non threatening, short white male pop star in the 80s. Perfect timing.

Phil gets a rough time. Great drummer, bit of a twat at times but fairly harmless and pretty normal.

Fairly harmless. I can think of no greater insult. How about that for a tombstone.

Here lies Phil Collins. Fairly Harmless.

Not that I wish the little gonk any personal harm mind.

Too much of a Tory twat for my stomach tho.

The trouble is some of you have your head buried so far up your own arses with your deluded music purist stance , you really cannot see how much of a twat you come across as and simply labelling something as "shit" is just ridiculous, when millions of record sales or millions of viewers shows otherwise. It may be brainless, predictable, by the numbers pop music, which may not be your thang, given your clearly higher social standing than us mere minions, however it meets a demand for the masses at a certain point in time, sometimes that demand continues for a very long time. It's not shit, it's just not your taste.

Why are you so bothered if someone thinks Madonna is shit ? If someone thinks an act is shit, then they are shit to them. No amount of "but they sold MILLIONS of Records" isn't going to change that. The only fact is they sold millions of records, them being shit or not is still subjective even if you trying to turn them not being shit into a fact.

most good music doesnt sell millions of records because the general public are stupid.

Obviously there are rare exceptions, but this generally holds true.

If something is popular with the idiots we share the planet with, then it is usually safe to brand it shit even if you havent listened to it/watched it/read it.

See, the music of mumford and sons/X factor/twilight films/the da vinci code for further details.

I'm not speaking about Madonna, I was referring to comments about Lionel Richie, but my sentiment could be applied to her also. I just find this whole dismissive "they're shit" attitude winds me up a treat and a "true" music lover, likes whatever they like, fuck the genre, the person, their style or politics. A true music lover, which some people on here purport to be, wouldn't be so single minded in that they can only listen to music they can sniff their own farts to.

There's plenty of genres and artists that I like only one or two of their songs and the rest does absolutely nothing for me, but I'm not going to label them "shit" as I appreciate that what they do produce has it's place and millions of others do like it, it's just not for me.

Each to their own dude, but if people are going to come out and be so dismissive I will equally retort.

which is as ridiculous a statement as any

Is it?

Is the x factor shit? Do you watch it?

are the twilight books shit? Have you read them?

Is rhiannas latest album shit? Have you heard it?

Statistics allow you to make informed opinions to a very high degree of probability that you are right.

Celine Dion. 200 million albums.

Think about that for a minute. 200 million people have picked up one of her records in a shop, queued up and paid their hard earned money for it.

A lot of them went to the shop with the express purpose of buying the album.

She's released something like 50 albums though hasn't she? It could just be 4 million people buying everything she's ever done.

I said there are always a handful of exceptions. But generally the theory is water tight.

I havent seen the hunger games, but I know to 99% certainty it's shite.

I tell you what, give the second one a go, pretty astute, subversive criticism of the capitalist system. Surprisingly.

All a matter of taste, but my point being if they were so "crap" they wouldn't be so successful would they?

Yes, it's entirely possible. Success is no guarantee of quality, much as a lack of success is no guarantee of a lack of quality. And if your next question is along the lines of 'well if someone is good then why wouldn't they be successful?' then you probably need to use your imagination.

Help me get your point, if he is so shit why has he been so successful?

Because it's tame, unchallenging, easily-digestible well-publicised fodder for people with little imagination. Actually it looks like you've answered your own question:

It may be brainless, predictable, by the numbers pop music, which may not be your thang, given your clearly higher social standing than us mere minions, however it meets a demand for the masses at a certain point in time

My point is that being shit or not is a matter of opinion.

Very true, but having an opinion does not instantly make you intolerant or dismissive.

However, if somebody has sold 100m + albums, they cannot be "that" shit can they.

Yes they can.

You can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but not all of the people all of the time. If he was that shit he would have been found out long before now.

He has. I'll take a punt that his record sales have been declining over the years.

Millions of record sales do not show otherwise, and what's wrong with having an opinion that something is shit?

Why can't you accept that some people think that Lionel Ritchie is shit? Isn't it possible to have a genuinely negative opinion of his music, or does everyone who dislikes his stuff only have that opinion because they're too busy smelling their own farts (whatever that means)?

    • I really like the Cheap Thrills! I saw them at the Ruby Lounge in Manchester in January at one of Chris Hawkins' "Awesome Friends" nights (which i think is why I even got tickets as it wasn't listed as a Cheap Thrills show!). Very good live and some great songs. I would've gone Saturday if I'd planned ahead!
    • They also seem to be in a mission to break the US with their new major label and this latest LP   Mid afternoon, live streamed on Disney+ is arguably a much bigger gig than Kendal Calling, if they had to skip one
    • This is massively exciting. I've been curious to who will be provide vocals for their live show and this is mega!
