No, they are a headliner. Whether it be Pyramid (prob not) or Other. They need to be on headlining or not at all really.

Although I agree at a few recent festivals they've been sub or somewhere before the main headliner, so shouldn't be completely ruled out, although Other headliner is perfect for them.

I hope The 1975 don't play next year. Had to endure the end of their set in Williams Green this year waiting for Metronomy and then again watch 30 mins of their set on the Pyramid waiting for Dolly. Really don't see how they've become so popular. It also shows how poor a lot of the new music coming through is at the moment if they're such a success story

Could The Prodigy sub like Pendulum did in 2011?

not as massive and "quality" as Pendulum...after all, it's not like they've ever headlined the pyramid...and with a band subbing them who were at their global peak of popularity like Smashing Pumpkins...

Not sure some of his language is Pyramid-friendly either.

remind me...did the pyramid-friendly language rule take effect before or after the pyramid front crowd barrier was put in place?

Also think the Kaiser Chiefs will get a Pyramid slot.

they've peaked Pyramid-wise...will never get better than the - still surprising - spot just before The Who and after the Manics, back in 2007...so, it's hardly a 'get' if they get rebooked back on Pyramid again

big 'female' slot if she's touring next year, 4th down maybe?

good point, as we need limit expectations of any female acts thinking they're "maybe" bigger than a 4th down spot.

how about if we put Matt42 in charge of booking this spot each year...and start off with a call to Madonna to explain the "4th down big female spot"

it is a bit considering a year ago it looked like their career had completely gone down the shitter, although they won't ever reach the same heights they once did. if this newfound popularity sustains then i imagine fourth down on Pyramid at best

really? they wouldnt have been anywhere close to on a level playing field with at least two of this year's third-down Pyramidders even if the album had done particuarly well, which it didn't

How much better did you want it to do than getting to number 1 and selling out the O2 off the back of it? Alt-J could easily play 3rd down.

I'd like it to have sustained success over a period of time rather than get to number one initially and then fall like a stone. So in other words have the level of success currently being enjoyed by Ed Sheeran, who played third down this year. Failing that, be a legend like Robert Plant or a friend of the festival like Lily Allen. :-)

pretty sure come the festival Alt-J will still be pretty high up on a lot of people's 'must see' lists. they're fucking garbage but people seem to love them

Absolutely people would go and see them. But my point is that if you stick them side-by-side with all three of this year's third down Pyramidders it'd look an odd booking, because none of the reasons that Ed/Percy/Lily got that slot apply to them.

i see your point but don't really get where you're going with it. The Vaccines played third the previous year - a band who very much seemed to be in the same position that Alt-J are now in (NME bate indie). if this is how bookings are gonna be done - sharing a comparison to the years previous bookings in the same slot - then we'd have a very limited lineup

(for the record, i don't think Alt-J will be on the Pyramid. headlining or subbing Other seems more likely)

That Pendulum sub slot during the daylight on Pyramid was poor & short, then Beyonce turned up late. I saw them five times that year (2011) & it was plop.

Pendulum with a decent new album (due) could be one of Glasto's future headlining bands.

Although I'd rather have them headline Other as an alternative to something I'm not bothered by.

no chance Pendulum could / would headline Glastonbury. Other headline seems far more likely (although haven't they pretty much ruled out live dates (in the near future, anyway)?)

Agree with most of this. Alt-J are a similar size to most bands who've played 3rd on Pyramid over the last few years, just because they're not as big as Ed Sheeran, who's probably big enough to sub, doesn't mean they're not big enough. Reckon they'll be on the Pyramid though since they played Other last time.

Not sure about live dates as they may still hate each other (Knife Party/Pendulum DJ set) but they would never sub again as it was so shit so they'd have to headline Other again, which I'd be happy with, & they probably would as well.

Fine, they sold out standing. Y'know, the only place 99% of people want to watch a gig.

Better let every act except Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and David Bowie know that they can't headline because they're not as big as the Stones, then, I suppose.

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
