my best mate was a bit of a fan back in the day. i'm not sure how excited she is at the prospect of seeing them at glasto, other vs pyramid etc. i will enquire and report back.

PersonallyI think tailoring their set to those that aren't really metal fans would be by playing fade to black, one, enter sandman, sad but true, the unforgiven, nothing else matters and wherever i may roam(mixed in with others of course)... Not sure if i'm the only one but i only really got into the black album and their lighter tracks. I've tried for years to get into the other stuff (and have seen them live) but it's just too heavy for me.

If they were to play those with rest of the 'greatest hits' and add a couple of guests i think they could be pretty special.

see The Black Album is a great starting point for them - that's definitely where i started and i assume many did the same. but now i'd much rather listen to Master Of Puppets / Ride The Lightning (where they hit their stride imo). those two albums are perfect from start to finish. …And Justice For All would be in there too if it wasn't for it's god awful bass-less production

I've seen them twice before. I don't have a ticket, but I've never seen them play Battery or Orion, 2 best songs off puppets IMO. If I don't get volunteering or resale: that fence be getting climbed.

Battery is the one that always manages to evade me as well, which is devastating as it's my favourite, so to hear it at Glastonbury… amazing

FWIW most of my music loving friends all like Metallica. There is a great deal of snobbery about Metallica headlining but they're a great band, and one I've yet to see live.

By the way, the large group of metal fans I used to hang about with absolutely revered them, and rightly so. Their first 5 albums are fantastic

As for John Grant, fantastic on CD but a bit pedestrian live. And that comment comes fresh from a gig of his a few nights ago.

Watching those (ace) videos Nal posted reminds me just how "pop" Metallica are. When I think of something like "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and compare it to, say, Deafheaven's latest it is far more accessible and "broad".

There are bandnames that can genuinely alter the perceptions of the public and mislead. Metallica is such a bandname. Theyre heavy, yes. But are they even in the same league as Slayer or Cannibal Corpse? No.
