nope, I don't think there's anything extra to it - tho perhaps it's possible for the stones performing this year to have changed the purple one's opinions on things.

I think the Prince thing mostly crops up because those of 'power' within music media are of an age where they'd have been massive Prince fans - so they desperately want it to be true.

I personally think that the want of Prince by the public at large is HUGELY over-stated, as a result of the above.

You are probably right there, I think, but he has some real crowd pleasers that I think those who don't know the material will be carried along with the atmosphere rather than getting bored and chatting about how their stocks and shares are doing and the value of their second home in Dorset.

But you could say the 'naming songs' thing about any number of previous headliners who are, nonetheless, massive. Neil Young, for instance: a supposed music fan friend of mine told me he couldn't name a single song of his. And Neil Young couldn't fill the O2 arena for 15 nights in a row.

Arcade Fire was by far the most solid info we'd had here in recent months for headliners - hence them having been 'strong rumour' for the Friday for quite a while.

We also got other names at the same time and from the same source - tho there was less certainty in the info we got about those.

And those names are...

Saturday - Led Zep

Sunday - Prince.

Personally I don't believe either of those, but it wouldn't be the first time that I've put little faith in what turned out to be true info.

What you're failing to appreciate there is the difference between fans and obsessive fans.

I've not been following things to know, tho we did make some efforts to check out the LZ thing, and while we got nothing back to suggest it might be true we also didn't get anything back that suggested that it couldn't happen.

Yeah, a couple of Swedish dates earlier in the month then Cork on the 25th

Well you could look at it two ways:

  • Robert Plant's doing solo shows in Europe in June, and is in Ireland two days before Glastonbury.
  • Robert Plant's doing solo shows in Europe in June, then he's in Ireland two days before Glastonbury!
I'd love it but since that was announced I've scratched out all possibility of it.

that sounds like the rumour is a total non-starter then.

I'd always thought that it was anyway.

this very much makes the other 2 headliners more interesting regarding the ME 'virgin' theory as clearly AF have played before.. the other 2 really cant have played before

saw prince in 1990 he was utter utter shyte

LZ would be coup of the millennium and effectively render the chance of a ticket in the re-sale to zero

got to be Roses

God I love Prince. Fucking amazing, and the thought of him playing brings me out in goosebumps. The only headliner sozed act in the world I'm interested in seeing, pretty much.

Never going to happen though.

he did Hop Farm (it was extraordinarily good) but that was more him playing his gig in a field, it was an extra day tagged on the end just for him.

Honestly, I don't think he'll ever do it, no.

why not? he did that other uk festival a couple of years ago so he obviously doesnt mind doing them. Surely he'll do it one day, dont you think?

the year Prince played at Hop Farm, I know that Live Nation were trying their hardest to book him for Hyde Park, but that they gave up on him because they couldn't get him to confirm - which seems to match the word we've heard that he'll only confirm a booking about 6 weeks before.

From what I heard, LN felt it was too much of a risk to go with him, because they'd either be promoting a show that they couldn't know if it would go ahead, or they'd only have a very short time (those 6 weeks) to promote the show which would have risked it not selling enough.... in the end they went out and did a special deal with The Killers (who weren't touring that year) to fill the empty date they needed to fill.

Glasto could, in theory, take the risk with Prince because selling tickets isn't an issue for them, but it would still risk them losing a planned headliner with not much time to fill it.

Personally tho I can't see them taking that chance; they have too many other safe and good options for them to take a risk that they don't need to take.

And also, i'm not sure that they'd have much trust in who they might be talking to about Prince. From bits and pieces i've picked up on, it seems to be the case that people say they're representing Prince when they're not (or at least, he won't go thru with what they're lining up for him).

All in all I'll be hugely surprised if prince were to headline, but you never know I guess..

    • The first half of that game was cracking but then I fell asleep at half time. Maybe that's just the momentum of things.

    • A win is a win but it was a very poor game with only 4 shots on target in the whole game. Scotland obviously handed a massive bonus with Brazil and Morocco drawing but I don't think either of them will be too worried.
