  1. I’m doing Secret Vida next week, their foray into a local Finca. It’s an ace concept to not announce the acts until they play - and the Rat Pack ticket looks similar to a Wild Side..
  2. And they added ‘Beirut’ yesterday..
  3. I did quite a few European festivals in 2018 & enjoyed Vida more than any other. In a lovely setting just in the edge of Vilanova, Spain - it’s well worth checking out. They’ll never have massive names but the setting and the people make up for that. Get a wild side ticket and beer, wine and cava is free all weekend!! Just announced Hot Chip, Superchunk and a few others to add to The Charlatans.
  4. News of one of the bills outstanding - probably not a good idea to annoy the local constabulary I reckon?? https://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/17262423.bestival-owes-dorset-police-more-than-140000/?ref=ebln
  5. Jarvis once sat behind me on a train journey from Sheffield to London. Knowing that people wouldn’t believe me I took this photo whilst he was sleeping. I realise it’s a pretty awful thing to do..
  6. His other headline Pyramid set still ranks as the best pyramid headline set I've seen at Glastonbury.. and that was with the added pleasure of some twat in the crowd standing behind me and pissing.. The man's older now but I suspect he still knows how to entertain... I'd be there..
  7. And my fave Spanish festival of this summer, Vida...
  8. What is it that appeals to you about Bestival? The line-up? The general cheeriness of the crowd? The price of the beer?(!!!) Have you looked into BeatHerder? Smaller than Bestival but has a quirky feel.. Failing that, how about an international one? Big names at reasonable prices.. Sean
  9. Is it really three years since myself and Kerplunk went... some insights here.. it was a great festival then although by the end of the weekend, you've had your fill of Psytrance and yearn for a guitar or two.. https://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/noisily/2015/review-overview.shtml Sean

    Depeche Mode

Saw Depeche Mode at Mad Cool this year - and was completely blown away. They surprised me - and I tried to think of a bigger UK group (that's still gigging) not to headline Glastonbury.. I couldn't.. this, for me, would be a more exciting headliner than The Cure..
  11. Digger's right. NO need to worry about feeling old at Boomtown - it's got a pretty inclusive feel to it, even though it has an 'edge' as well..
  12. I watch a fair few films. In the past week i’ve watched a couple that went under my radar a bit but both have been excellent and both got me thinking that there must be others out there that feature festivals we love as a backdrop. So - Come on Eileen - a lovely low-budget film from about 2012 (with Noel Fielding, Julia Davis and Keith Allen all taking small roles) prominently features a festival that I believe is Field Day. It’s definitely worth watching. And - Robot & Scarecrow is a beautiful short movie that, I think, was filmed at Secret Garden Party. Does anybody out there know of others? Obviously not including bigger things such as this year’s ‘Festival’...
  13. Good luck all... Fingers crossed and all that...(actaully don't cross your fingers because it'll make pressing F5 that much harder) Sean
  14. This year's Bestival did feel like a general success though.. It was never going to reach the heights of five/six years ago in terms of scale etc. but I genuinely thought it had found a niche for itself that it could potentially operate from. A real shame if this is the end after the hard work that many have put in - I agree that 2018's was one of the better Bestival's of recent years..
  15. Really interested by this thread. Trevor’s review is a good one. He speaks as he finds and gives honest reflections about the festival. That’s what I want to read in s review. It’s got me thinking though. I’m pretty sure that I heard a pretty strong independence mantra at Primavera Sound this year. In fact, I pretty much complemented the Catalans on their attitude in my review. Was I wrong to do so?
  16. You’ve not heard of Camera Obscura? Check them out - it’s Tracy-Anne’s possibly permanently retired band & they’re brilliant. Danny’s the main man in Bristol band , Cry Baby, who are also ace.
  17. Thought i’d already done this. Here’s my review of this year’s Bestival. Boy, it was a hot one.. https://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/bestival/2018/review.shtml
  18. My eFestival review is now published. I quite deliberately chose to read nothing posted on here before writing it. I hope our views align a bit. Lovely to meet a few on Thursday as well. https://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/boomtown/2018/review.shtml
  19. Just had the best of first days at Benicassim. This is how you do a festival. X
  20. Agreed - not something i’d typically do - in fact I don’t think I’ve ever skipped a festival day when reviewing before - do a real sign of how appalling (and dangerous) I found the Thursday. I’m sure that Neil would love to publish an alternative review if you’d like to write one to give some balance? Sean
  21. I didn’t think the sound was as incredible as you make out. Lots of sound bleed across the site for me. And from a distance there was popping and all sorts. Transport and infrastructure was far less considered than it is at (for example) Primavera. We disagree about Mad Cool and that’s cool. I think it got a lot wrong. You don’t. But it does seem like we were at a different festival!! I don’t enjoy reviewing it in the way I did. I’m not a negative sort by nature - and I think this is possibly the most scathing I’ve ever been in my hundred or so reviews over the past years for this site. I just got very little buzz or excitement from Mad Cool. Let’s see if I dislike Benicassim as much!!
  22. Fair point actually.. I’ll look to get the review amended. I read the same press release in Spanish on Monday and interpreted it as a statement of joint culpability but it’s not actually saying that at all!! Sean
  23. Yep - I’m sure that’s right. Boomtown made a right pigs ear of entry last year and yet my review was glowing because what followed was epic..
  24. Anybody fancy an eFests catch up this evening? Impromptu like.. I’m heading up on the train from Alicante now for my first ever Benicassim at an ancient age!! Saw Zulu Zulu earlier this year at Eurosonic and they were awesome.. Right side of the stage for them perhaps? Sean
  25. I’ve been lucky enough to review both Primavera and Mad Cool this year for eFestivals. Trust me - there is no comparison. I’m almost wondering if these Mad Cool apologists went to the same festival that I did. Beer queues at Primavera were insignificant and minuscule compared to those at Mad Cool. It’s not a competition between festivals but if it were I’d rank them like this so far this summer. (1) Vida festival - boutique and all sorts of astonishing. (2) Primavera - Solid, dependable, excellent organisation. (3) Alicante Live - a lovely surprise. Worth exploring. (4) We are Murcia (WARM) - Alt J and Kasabian saved this big cat park of a gig. Lots of top notch Spanish bands though. (5) Mad Cool - Graat line up, shambolic organisation. At times dangerous in terms of numbers. Happy to debate..
