New Area

If you could invent / curate a new area for Glastonbury, what would it:-

- Look like?

- Sound like?

- Feel like?

- Taste like?

Also

- Would you have a stage?

- Who would you book to play?

Would there be a theme?

Would it have a political element?

Both serious and funny answers are welcome.

I like the idea of making a wooden structure which frames a large tent, themed as a sci fi environment so that from the outside it looks like a spaceship that has landed. Inside it would just be bars on either side with video screens pumping out visualisations to suitable music and allow people to use the space rather than particularly considering the kind of place an act would perform. I suppose you could connect to other tents to create different areas of the craft.

Nice beach area would be nice with sand, palm trees, loungers, etc.

And a small sea / lake if possible, you could have it at the bottom of Pennards as it seemed to hold the water well in 2005!

Could have boats/rafts in the middle of the lake, with small stage or bar which you have to row out too or wade out to

Playing nice chilled out vibes all day. Tropical fresh fruit stalls and a cocktail bar

The Playground

Bright colors, Soft things to sit on, Lots of lights confetti and stuff along them likes

The stage will be populated by fun light hearted electronic acts such as The Go! Team, Dan Deacon & bringing them out of hiatus to play my amazing new stage The Avalanches by night and bands such as The Apples In Stereo and of Montreal by day. Eclectic pop music spanning various genres basically.

The food and drinks served there would mostly be fairground and childhood favorites with unique twists.

Think of it as the childrens area for adults.

My area would look like : An industrial heavy metal power station with loads of barbed wire (like Trash City and Arcadia)

My area would sound like : heavy metal of all genres!

My area would feel like : Pretty heavy metal (like a hammer) Mosh, headbang, scream, sing, drink, sleep.

My area would smell like : Paraffin (from all the flames) mixed with sweat, deodorant and Red Bull.

My area would have two stages both outdoor side by side like Wacken Festival (probably smaller stages though) to reduce the time inbetween bands

I'd book:

Machine Head, Slayer and Rammstien to Headline

Get Lamb of God, Megadeth and In Flames before with loads of other acts!! (Trivium, Amon Amarth etc)

My area would be very 80's metal themed. With a Motley Crue/ Kiss stage show every day for every single band complete with people people trapezing over the bands. There will be lots of big hair, heavy power chords, ballads and Steel Panther. However it will not be exclusive to bands who have the 80's metal sound everyone and anyone is able to play as long as they are able to make the place jump up and down and have an amazing atmosphere.

People who are banned from playing however are Arctic Monkeys, Mumford and Sons, Linkin Park, Kings of Leon, 99% of current chart music and Coldplay. This includes individual members playing too.

Bourbon street. Partly inspired by the former glastonbury venue but more by the new orleans street from which it took its name.

An actual street (new orleans style), lined with mainly small (indoor and largely enclosed) bars and venues branded as a 'late night area' but home to live music. How many times have we read on here how people want something other than dance late at night?

Such alternatives already exist but this would give a concentration of them playing blues, jazz, bluesy rock, rockabilly, soul etc. I would want one reasonably sized venue for slightly better kniwn acts to play... Possibly as a second set having played elsewhere earlier. Last year the likes of Vintage trouble, charles bradley and gary clark jr playing a headline slot at around 2-3 in the morning could have gone down a storm. The railing stains could play there this year...

How about an area doing tethered hot air balloon rides - imagine seeing the site from 1000 feet!! Imagine it at night!!! You can insist no-one gets on who's obviously really pissed (to keep H&S happy). Could do several at a time and with them lit up at night by the burners (see Bristol Balloon Festival), it would look spectacular.

A trip Hop area / Stage only open from say 7pm until 12.30 am. perhaps in the Glade or spirit of 71 was. About 4 bands a night.

I would ask the like of, Tricky, Morcheeba, Massice attack, Lamb et al.

After the evenings entertainment had ended you could turn it into a large chill out zone with Trip Hop music playing in the background. And some large cushions to chil out

This might turn into a field like the latino one last year that was very empty last year

You could have a different theme everyear in that area

This is winning so far for me. I like the idea of the street. You could also have food outlets selling collard greens and other soul food from the US. Late night poker games, whisky, cocktails and cigars. Dance classes for lindihop, blues and jive during the daytime. A couple of legend sets just after the main stages close.

How about the Ummagamma tent. No live bands, just a facility where you can lie on the floor tripping out to Flloyds and others out of loud speakers. Tea and cake will be provided, though sorry nothing else, though we will look the other way should you wish to add anything else :)

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
