    Weighting Allowance then ?

    The Dirty Independence Question

Meanwhile ... why ain't you taking me up on the London Weighting Allowance argument ? That's also financial assistance given by Government to a specific section within the population of a territorially defined part of the UK. Why is that not racist* ? *using what I'm led to believe (by your good self) is the UK legal definition

    The Dirty Independence Question

That isn't whataboutery. This is whataboutery "an informal fallacy which attempts to suggest that the opponent's argument should be ignored because there are more important problems in the world " Whataboutery is move the convo to an unrelated subject. What I was merely pointing was that, given you seem convinced that institutional racism is taking place, surely you have a civic duty to make the relevant authorities aware. You haven't of course because this is a just fer laffs discussion thread, and every click helps. Not that I'm knocking it as such (otherwise I wouldn't be here), but I do find it helpful to remember in order to maintain a sense of perspective about the throwaway comments here.

Oh, its a bit naughtier than guessing. From today's Indy (the newspaper) " Treasury figure for cost of Yes vote ‘badly misrepresents’ key research – says academic whose own work it was based on"

You *have* reported this to the Police and/or Crown Prosecution Service and/or your MP and/or Scottish Executive ? Haven't you ? I'll be very disappointed if you haven't

Fixed that 4 u "Civic nationalism is a kind of nationalism identified by political philosophers who believe in a non-xenophobic form of nationalism compatible with values of freedom, tolerance, equality, and individual rights" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civic_nationalism

One more time. Its a policy based on residency, not ethnicity. Using your logic, the London weighting allowance is racist.

Ah, now I see why you've de-personalised it. Smart move.

    The Dirty Independence Question

bit of a cheap shot that, although you've said SG rather than SNP or Salmond (deduct points for that) Other than that its the predictable, deliberate misrepresentation. The difference between civic nationalism and ethnic nationalism is not one lost on you, yet it suits the argument to continually pretend otherwise. 4 out of 10 EDIT: Civic nationalism lies within the traditions of rationalism and liberalism, but as a form of nationalism it is contrasted with ethnic nationalism. Membership of the civic nation is considered voluntary, as in Ernest Renan's classical definition in "Qu'est-ce qu'une nation?" of the nation as a "daily referendum" characterized by the "will to live together". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civic_nationalism

    The Dirty Independence Question

Y'know that article does contain this little gem "Salmond's case was weakened further because he would need the UK government's agreement to use article 48 under the first minister's timetable for negotiating accession before Scotland became independent. There was no prospect of the UK doing so if Scotland planned to discriminate against UK students on fees or fight to share UK opt-outs, the committee said." So the UK Govt are saying they might support the use of the Article 48 fast track method, but might want some concessions eg ditch uni fees for EWNI students. The pre-negotiation negotiating continues.

and who might be doing the telling ? The Scottish Government are being told by the chair of the Scottish Affairs select committee. Who is ? Step forward, Ian 'Bayonet the Wounded' Davidson, Labour MP for Glasgow South West. next. EDIT: and possibly a future MSP for the Glasgow Pollok constituency

    The Dirty Independence Question

This is a minor classic. A tweet from the CEO of pro Union referendum campaign group Better Together. "Salmond ignoring that 140k voted for a xenophobic party and arguing we're different from England" https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BokICjhIQAEFjhL.jpg 4.18am 26 May

    The Dirty Independence Question

Given that politics has famously been described as the art of the possible, I daresay that's political territory. As you said, lawyers are not the legislature. 'Diametrically opposed' seems a rather extreme characterisation of hypothetical post-Yes negotiations ? Can't think of too many European countries that the UK is diametrically opposed to. We even seem to get on ok with Spain, despite the ongoing tensions surrounding Gibraltar.

    The Dirty Independence Question

A re-negotiation of inter-national arrangements might be another way to put it ? Within the context of greater integration at supra-national level , to whit the European Union ?

    The Dirty Independence Question

I'm reminded of Paragraph 30 of the Memorandum of Agreement (aka the Edinburgh Agreement) ‘The two governments are committed to continue to work together constructively in the light of the outcome, whatever it is, in the best interests of the people of Scotland and of the rest of the United Kingdom.’
