I would like to postulate that Glasto gets the same representative amount of 'rock' as it does pop, dance, blues, hiphop etc. - if not more than some of these. 2 of this years headliners were quite clearly rock, after all. As were Muse, U2, Killers, McCartney etc.

Glasto is a little bit like a greatest hits of the various musical genres - you don't get the more extreme exponents of rock, nor do you get for example Girls Aloud or some of the grittier urban groups.

Glastonbury doesn't shy away from heavier acts, it just doesn't prioritise them, as it has absolutely no reason to. We say this all of the time, but if you want heavier acts, seriously, go to Download. 99.9% of Glastonbury attendees have no problem with the lack of Metulz, the ones that do should just go to fucking Download! It's what it's for.

just about all the rock/metal bands mentioned in this thread were doing the rounds 20 years ago when i went through the obligatory teenage heavy metal phase (some of whom, Rage, Tool, i have seen at Glastonbury). who are the new bands on the block thses days, or is it still all about the old guard?

How you define 'rock' will affect this argument. There are those who would consider The Stones to be 'rock' and therefore consider 'rock' to be well respresented, I suspect the OP isn't of this opinion and is referring to heavier stuff.

Why do heavy rock bands have to be considered for headline slots?

Surely further down on Other, John Peel, William's Green would be a suitable place to see The Sword, Fu Manchu, Red Fang etc. ... hell a bit of progressive metal up in the Park would be magic.
