I don't usually jump on a bandwagon but I have this one. I have been following the Facebook arguments with interest and there is a great deal of anger. Given the obscene funeral she will get and the World coverage it will receive, I feel it important that the World understands the ill feeling many have.

It didnt all come to an end.

The unions are still very strong in some sectors. Train drivers start on a basic £42k, and completely hold all of the train companies to ransom. Which is almost entirely why train fares are so ridiculous these days. I have a close friend in the industry, it drives him up the wall.

I understand the role of Unions in the workplace, and the value they can bring, but my own personal experiences of unions is not a positive one.

I dont claim to be an expert, but the only time I ever worked anywhere that had a union, if you werent a member - people didnt even talk to you, and the shop steward was a complete prick towards anyone who refused to pay them money for doing fuck all.

The trouble is, if corporations have all the power - the workers get fucked (sometimes)

there doesnt appear to be a great middle ground.

Ive got another mate who is the union rep at one of the post office depots round here, and he spends most of his time bragging about how he can basically call the shots anywhere at work, and the rest of his time telling friends how they can lay down the law at their place of work, even when their employers are entirely reasonable.

A fact quoted by the beeb during the anniversary of the miners strike was that more pits were closed under labour administrations than Tory. In fact all the ones in my community were closed under labour. I've also noticed in the papers recently talk of a general strike now due to the cuts when Osborne has effectively been copying Alistair Darlings plans.

That does seem to be one fault of the unions many acts seem to be politically motivated and they let labour get away with a hell of alot more than the Tories. Definitely one of the reasons they have lost so much support with the British public.

My experience has been that without a union, you have to fight for everything yourself, and have to be really savvy not to get shafted. So unions can do a good job of keeping staff informed of their rights, and giving good advice as there's inevitably going to be a conflict of interest between employer and employee.

The factory where i work is losing money (lot of investment, but massively squeezed by the supermarkets) - we proposed a 1% rise to the unions and if we hit certain targets, then they get 3% next- can't really afford it, but want to show some willing. Unions have rejected it twice - we've had to just pay it anyway and see if they do anything. One thing's for sure, the 3% is off the table next year. If we were making a load of money, then fair enough, but we have losses and are hoping the future volumes, price rises and increased efficencies (not jobs losses) bring us into the black.
