Got to agree with Zico, to me they are just a big beards and nearly naked ladies gimmick band, my point here is not that I am right and those who see them as quality bluesmen are wrong but that where they may play (stage and how high on the bill) is more dictated by how well they will be anticipated and by how many people than the musicianship displayed, there are plenty of bands who are outstanding muscicians but unheard of, they will not play the pyramid stage.

how are they a gimmick band? Because they have long beards? Hendrix said billy gibbons is a better guitarist than he is. Is that a gimmick too?

Was hendrix a gimmick because he set fire to his guitar?

Of course they'd play the pyramid. It would be sad to see them play for 45mins under the vaccines or whatever tosh it is you listen tothough

Well, if you don't know much other than the popular synth-based tracks from the 80's then they might come across a bit tacky (understandable move when you consider popular music at that time) but before then and even in the period after then up until now, they've been a top blues act and have made some lovely stuff. Moving Sidewalks, another Gibbons band, was quite cool too if you're into that. I only got into them when hearing how big an influence Gibbons was on Josh Homme and I really enjoy the first handful of albums.

Ok, I was trying to be nice, I listen to lots of music, in a large part blues which is why I think that ZZ top are mor, wanna be shite, they are to blues what shakin stevens is to rocn n roll, only my opinion.Listen to (for example, there are many more ) Sonny Boy Williamson or BB King. They are bluesmen.

They're clearly influenced by blues yeah. Doesn't make them shite though. Everyone is influenced by blues!

And its more paying homage to blues than Shakin Stevens parody type nonsense.

La Grange for example. Basically a cover of Boogie Chillen' by John Lee Hooker. A good one too.

But they're very much in the "serious rock acts" category, well travelled bluesmen, so not sure if they'd be keen on a token 50 minute slot beneath Vampire Weekend or whoever?

I agree, but you could look at it another way and say they might not have been opposed to playing underneath someone like Elvis Costello this year, or possibly Dolly Parton next year....?

You are right, I was expressing the opinion that they are not well enough thought of widely enough to headline and at least a couple of people have said that they should.

If you like thwm great! Big festival, room for everyone, I was responding to the ascertion that because I dont likezz top I listen to tosh, very small minded.

You say they could never play the pyramid as if the pyramid is some sacred space that only the best of the best plays.

I can list famous bluesmen too, so what?

"they will not play the pyramid stage"

Oh dear, how funny, read again, I am saying that the unknown but talented muscicain that I was discussing would never play the pyramid ( not while the met those conditions) ZZTop could play anwhere, as I said it is a big festival, but qould not, in my opinion, headline.

So what tosh is it that your esp tells you I listen to or is everything but ZZTop tosh?

Is English your first language? Serious question.

No one has said anything about them headlining.

Judging by your writing style and lack of comprehension I suspect you are either drunk or on hard drugs which, considering the time of day, should be applauded I suppose.

i can't be bothered reading through the last few pages, but are people seriously suggesting that ZZ Top wouldn't play the Pyramid as they may think they're too good for that / to play under acts such as Vampire Weekend? (just the example i saw used)

they must know by now that they're seen as quite a novelty act (these days, anyway.) i doubt they'd turn up their nose at playing below bands who they may not consider 'worthy' or what have you

i reckon if they were to play, i'd almost definitely be Pyramid (fourth down?), or pushing it, Other. can't imagine them playing on one of the smaller stages as i'm sure they'd be quite an attraction to people (for the reasons many have said on here - a lot of people would go see them at Glastonbury but not fork out for their own shows)

if i've totally misread this discussion then ignore all of the above, but if not, there's my two cents

You haven't misread no. I'm not sure if they'd play that spot. They play metal festivals and Crossroads Blues Festivals with Clapton and Buddy Guy, high up at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Headlined a festival above Crosby, Stills and Nash in Holland last year. Were 2nd last on the West Holts equivalent at Bonnaroo etc etc.

Just can't see them taking a novelty spot on the Pyramid Stage with people sitting around waiting to see Kasabian. Where the only cheer they'd get is for the drum into to Gimme All Your Lovin. Would be much better suited on the West Holts.

of course, you might think Jeff Beck is a novelty act too

Speaking of which. Hes touring in June. nothing after the first week booked. One of the all time great guitar players.

i think i must need some educating here as well, I only know them from give me all yoru lovin', legs and sharp dressed man and i always took them as a kinda novelty rock band with comedy beards.

sorry like, at my age i should know better but they have kinda slipped through the net!

Billy Gibbons was Jimi Hendrix favorite guitarist.. Not a novelty act

One of the great things this site has done has made me re-evaluate zz top. A year ago, I wouldn't have pissed on them if they were burning in the street. Now, I'd quite like to see them, and that 'gots to get paid' song gets an airing fairly regularly at Mardy Mansions.
