Yeah it's mildly accurate regarding general popularity - for example Green Day are bound to have more followers on twitter and facebook likes than Deap Vally - but trying to use it to place bands at a festival is never going to work.

Twitter is ridiculous because there are other factors, such as the quality of the blog (which is what twitter actually is, lest we forget). A better, though obviously not perfect way, to judge popularity is youtube views because at least then it's all about the music. Even better is actual sales figures for gig tickets and albums. All are available, so why not just skip to the most reliable?

I think placements are just common sense and people usually don't argue that one band should be above another, this is the first time i can think of when people have been so outraged about a band being below another
