Does anyone know what sort of viewing figures the BBC coverage gets these days. It must be the single best outlet for a band exposing their music on TV to the masses these days - there arent really any other free to view music programmes on TV now other than Jules

... other than X Factor of course

From a financial perspective (as a result of philanthropic and charitable efforts) potentially.

Other than that? Over to you mate.

Where's bigger than the Pyramid on a Saturday night in June live on the BBC?

Ive been to festivals in the US and in Europe. Nothing competes with it. It is the premier musical moment of the calendar year.

I detect a little bitterness in your post "some on here...". People are justifiably proud of Glastonbury.

Artists that don't buy into the whole thing are either media shy or greedy or both.

I agree.

Like someone said in that Bowie thread, that if he was going to do a one-off gig then why on earth would he pick glastonbury? A one-off gig in Central Park or something would be miles better.

Which is why glastonbury should forget about all these mega stars it is obsessed with these days. If this means the likes of mumford & sons headlining, so be it.

I also doubt there's anything which sells more records for artists (I realise that's a result of the tv exposure but I thought it was a valid point to make.)

Janelle Monae's sales went up by over 1000% in the week after she played.

From a bands point of view, Madison Square Garden with an appearance on Letterman the night before.

Bands usually look to America before anywhere. There are stadiums in America we've never heard of that can take 110k for bands like the Stones, U2 and Madonna.

Exceptions of course of bands who really get Glastonbury - Blur, Bowie etc but its rare. Springsteen has been touring the world since 1973, has played with everyone worth their salt and he'd never even heard of it.

One off events though right? Glastonbury is an annual thing (bar fallow years).

The festival takes bands outside of this arena/stadium routine. It challenges them and can be viewed as having big risks - both positively and negatively.

A gig in the 'Garden is a gig in the Garden. That there has to be pre-hype on a chat show is testament to this.

Bruce was "ignant" of Glasters before and after the show chief. He made a hames of his appearance. Also he's not a big festival tourer anyway.

I'm not being precious about Glasters either. Just stating a fact. The BBC provides as many people to cover the festival as something as vast as an Olympic Games.

That there is any hesitance from bands appearing at the festival is down to scheduling (Daft Punk), ego (Stones & probably Dylan, recently) or money (Roses).
